CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos women's basketball team subdued the visiting UBC Thunderbirds with an authoritative 70-50 win.
In head coach Damian Jennings' four year career with the Dinos, this win marks the first time they have won against UBC under his leadership. With this win, the Dinos improve to 6-1 and continue their quest to be one of the top teams in Canada West.
In the first half, both teams struggled offensively but were evenly matched. A standout on the Dinos squad was Claire Colborne whose strong presence on the court through points and rebounding elevated the team's performance. At the end of the first quarter, both teams were tied at 18 apiece but the Dinos would capitalize on the Thunderbirds' inability to score in the second to maintain a minimum 10 point lead.
Colborne finished the night with 16 points (shooting 7-16 from the field) and 8 rebounds. Her standout performances in the Dinos' past few games have solidified her position as one of the centerpieces for the Dinos women's squad. Other standouts were Brianna Ghali who finished the night with 10 points on 4-7 shooting. Kelsey Lund and Jenna Spruyt were strong presences on rebounding with 8 rebounds each.
This was a big night for head coach Damian Jennings. Although he was happy about the outcome of the game and the historic win, he said the Dinos have room for improvement. He said "we haven't beaten them since 2010 so to beat UBC right now is good for us. That's some new history. We're a little disappointed with the effort area from our end. With a game coming out with a 20 point win you can't be too disappointed [but] we want to be the Top 2 in Canada West and Top 4 in the CIS. The performance in its own right is not really good enough so tomorrow we expect a better performance but I think we owned most of the rebounds and the possession game in that way."
Regarding their successful season so far, he said "this season we've actually dug out some really good road performances so we just need a good performance here at home. We have high expectations of ourselves which is why we'll talk about how we need to be better but it's good to be 6-1."
The Dinos will face the UBC Thunderbirds again tomorrow night on Saturday, Nov 28 at 5 pm at home in the Jack Simpson Gym.
