CALGARY - In a high intensity finale to the team's doubleheader against the UBC Thunderbirds, the Dinos were able to come away with a 74-72 win that was decided in the final minutes of the game.
With this close win, the Dinos improve to 7-1 while UBC falls to 2-6.
Between both teams, there was an evenly matched effort with a lot of back and forth possessions. Breakdowns on possessions and turnovers for both teams would make the game sluggish and the Dinos' lack of gathering rebounds from T-Birds misses hurt them. Compared to last night's game, however, the Dinos played with more offensive cohesiveness and were effective in feeding their forwards in the paint.
Players Brianna Ghali (17 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals), Kelsey Lund (13 points on 6-10 shooting, 5 rebounds), Kristie Sheils (13 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds), and Vanessa Wesolowski (11 points on 5-7 shooting) were the key standouts for the Dinos tonight. On the T-Birds, Kara Spotton had an incredible performance with 29 points on 9-20 shooting and 11-13 free throws. Spotton was key for the T-Birds' success in keeping the game close.
This game was decided in the final two minutes of the game where both teams would take back and forth 1 point leads to the final second. With 23 seconds left in the game, a missed shot by T-Birds' Spotton was followed by an intentional foul on Kristie Sheils who scored 1 of her 2 free throws. This made the game score 74-72 for the Dinos. In the final seconds, T-Birds' Diana Lee missed a very close 3 point shot which would have given UBC the win but the Dinos breathed a sigh of relief as they emerged victorious.
Head coach Damian Jennings was relieved at the final outcome of the game. Regarding the difference between last night's and tonight's win, he said "we won by 20 last night but we were disappointed with the personality of our play. Tonight there were moments when our personality was really good but our worst basketball was not fun and in fairness a lot of that was UBC and they went to the right personnel at the right time."
Next, the Dinos face the Alberta Pandas on Saturday, December 5 at home in the Jack Simpson Gym at 5 PM.
