Dinos handily defeat Bobcats in rematch

CALGARY - It was a solid 3-0 victory for the Dinos Women's Volleyball team Saturday night over the Brandon University Bobcats.

Only the bight before the women fell 3-1 to the paws of the Bobcats, but they recovered quickly and took their second game at home.

Dinos Outside Hitter Ali Woolley led the game in kills, with 12 of the teams 39. Bobcats' Jodie Baker was a close second with seven of her team's 31. Erika Myhre had 32 of the Dinos' 37 saves, compared to that of Mary Thomson's 23 for the 'Cats. Both teams tied digs with 42 a piece, Thomson leading for the away team with 10 and 10 for Woolley.

Head Coach Natalie Gurnsey said the main difference between Friday's game and Saturdays was the ability to hit serve targets.

"We had a lot of trouble with that [last night]," she said. "We cleaned that up and it made all the difference."

The first set would mimic that of the Friday's game with the Bobcats taking an early lead with the Dinos close behind; the Dinos executing some key tips, a staple of the weekend.

Going into the first technical timeout is when the girls found their rhythm and would pull ahead on the scoreboard. A few fumbles with the ball gave the Bobcats a chance to claw their way back - an opportunity they would capitalize on - but it wouldn't be enough and the Dinos would maintain their lead and take a 25-20 win in the first.

"We came on stronger tonight, because obviously we were upset from yesterday," said fourth year Woolley. "It gave us that extra motivation to come out and do our best."

Dinos' Janna Ogle hitting an ace in her first serve wouldn't be enough to maintain their lead early in the second and trailed until a huge block by Amber Adolf and Brianna Solberg, paired with Jillian Lazic's serves put them back in the game, going back-and-forth in the scoring.

The set would finish 25-22 for the Dinos off the hit of Laura McManes. They only needed one more set to take the win; and it was a set they would dominate.

The Bobcats wanting to push it to a fourth set, and the Dinos not wanting to give up their 2-0 lead over the 'Cats, the beginning of the third was tight - but not for long.

A 10-point deficit the Bobcats got themselves in going into the third Technical was all the Dinos needed to finish them off, and a kill by Ogle would finish off the game with an easy 25-12 win in the third.

"We really stuck to the game plan and did what coach told us to do. We really focused on our passing and I think we did a really good job of that tonight," said Woolley.

"It's so great to win at home."

The Dinos are back at home on Friday November 14-15 in a double-header weekend against the University of British Columbia Okanagan Heat.
