WolfPack takes advantage of Dinos errors

KAMLOOPS, B.C. — The Thompson Rivers University WolfPack women's volleyball team rallied from a setback in the second set and downed the University of Calgary Dinos 3-1 in Canada West action on Friday night.

The scores on the Warner Rentals court at the Tournament Capital Centre were 25-18, 15-25, 25-15,25-18. Both teams are now 3-2 on the year.

"Serve and pass is so important to this game,"said Dinos head coach Natalie Gurnsey. "It is really hard to get into a rhythm if you are not serving and passing well. We didn't have that tonight.

"Some nights it's inexplicable," Gurnsey continued when asked about why it occurred. "Maybe it could be a little bit of our youth of our passing group. Some nights when it's off it is off."

TRU was led offensively by Canada West 'Second Star of the Week' Iullia Pakhomenko (4th year, outside hitter, Donetsk, Ukraine).  She had 18 kills in 44 chances with a service ace and 12 digs.

Morgan Kolasa (3rd year, middle, Calgary, AB) had seven kills in 16 swings with two service aces, two digs, a solo block and two block assists.  Kaitlin Lomas (3rd year, middle, Ponoka, AB) added four kills in 11 chances with two service aces, three solo blocks and seven block assists.

Katie Woo (4th year, setter, Surrey, BC) had 36 assists, three service aces and five digs.

Kendra Finch (1st year, outside hitter, North Vancouver, BC) was named the "McDonalds/TRU Bookstore "Leader of the Pack" player of the match. She had four kills in 11 chances with three service aces, five digs and one block assist.

Calgary's main offensive threats were Ali Woolley (4th year, outside hitter, Toronto, ON) and Brianna Solberg (3rd year, outside hitter, Winnipeg, MB) with 10 kills apiece. Woolley had 10 kills in 28 opportunities with seven digs.  Solberg had 32 chances with nine digs.   Beth Vinnell (2nd year, middle, Cochrane, AB) added eight kills in 20 chances.   Erika Myhre (2nd year, setter, Strathmore, AB) had 35 assists with seven digs, one solo block and three block assists.

The two teams meet again Saturday night to close out the series.

"I think we need to refocus on what we do well and come out more aggressive," said Gurnsey. "I didn't feel we were as aggressive as we should be to match them offensively. We need to change that tomorrow. We will change our mindset. We have been consistently better on the second night. I would expect that from these girls again."

First serve goes at 6 p.m. MT Saturday.
