CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos suffered their first loss of the season on Friday night when they hosted the Brandon Bobcats. Brandon took the game 3-1 (25-23, 20-25, 25-16, 25-23).
The win gives Brandon their first of the season, while the Dinos drop to 2-1.
"I feel like we only had one player that showed up and did their job today. We had a whole bunch of people that did not do the simple things and it got us into trouble," said Dinos head coach
Natalie Gurnsey.
For the second weekend in a row, middle
Beth Vinnell led the way for the Dinos with 15 kills on the night.
Ali Woolley was the only other Dino to hit double digits with 10 kills and seven digs. Setter
Erika Myhre recorded 37 assists and a team-high 15 digs. Rookie libero
Natasha Gordey added 11 digs for Calgary.
The Bobcats were led by left-side Shanlee McLennan with 13 kills and 11 digs. Regan Dahl added 12 kills and nine digs to their totals while middle Breanne Sytnyk recorded 12 kills and Jodie Baker had 10 of her own. Libero Donata Huebert had a game-high 16 digs in the match and setter Mary Thompson recorded 45 assists.
The Dinos had a slow start to begin the first, but found their stride later on in set, finally tying it up at 19 with an ace from Myhre. Despite catching up, they were unable to lock down the first set win, defeated by the Bobcats 25-23.
The second set was a different look for Calgary, going up 9-3 early on. A surge from Brandon got them within three at the technical timeout, but from there, the Dinos took back the momentum and tied the game up at one with a 25-20 win.
In the third set, the Dinos were unable to carry the momentum over. Gurnsey's differently line combinations were to no avail as the Dinos slipped further and further from the lead. They were defeated 25-16 in the third.
In a do-or-die set, Calgary let the Bobcats go up early again. Later in the set, the Dinos were able to tie it at 23 with kills from Vinnell and Woolley. Despite that, the Dinos were overcome by the Bobcats for the 3-1 loss with a final set score of 25-23.
Both teams will go at it again tomorrow night at Jack Simpson Gymnasium with a start time of 4 p.m.
