Dinos settle with scoreless draw against Vikes

CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos women's soccer team finished their last home-game of the season with a 0-0 draw to the University of Victoria Vikes.

Their double-header weekend finished with a 0-1-1 record, finishing their final home games.

"They put up a good fight," said fourth year Amanda Pak. "It didn't go our way today."

Majority of the first half was dominated by the Vikes - their shots coming closest to finding the back of the net – but the Dinos' keeper Samantha Chang-Foidl managed to get her body in front of the ball and the Dinos defence kept the forwards at bay.

The biggest opportunity of the half came in the 31st minute when Vikes' #23 Mia Gunter had a shot at an open net while Chang-Foidl fumbled atop the 18, but in a rush she would kick the ball far left.

Just like their game the day before, the Dinos would end the half in a 0-0 draw.

The second half was much like the first with a buffet of shots and scrambles in front of either net, but neither team could finish the ball.

Despite the continued opportunities from both sides, neither team could score in the 90 minutes of play and the game would end in a clean-sheet for both sides.

"We just didn't take advantage of all the opportunities we had," said Pak.

But this wouldn't only be the last home-game of the season for the team, it was also the last home-game ever for fifth year Lauren Vernon.

Head Coach Troye Flannery gave a small speech "For a small player" after all the handshakes were over and the game was shaken off. He regaled on his first time seeing Vernon, an eight-year-old on his U10 team, and how much she had changed and improved over the years.

"I say goodbye to her at West Varsity as a Dino," said Flannery. "There is only one word to describe Lauren Vernon and it's 'outstanding.' Outstnding character, student and player."

The Midfield and fourth year Arts student held back tears as she thought back to her last four years with the team.

"I am pretty upset, because it is my last game as a Dino at home," said Vernon. "I think we struggle a bit in the first half, but I think we came out strong in the second half and it was a pretty fair game."

Vernon finished at home with a draw against the second-place team in the Pacific Division, giving them one of a possible three points. Despite not coming out with a win, she said it's better than coming out with no-points at all.

"I obviously always want a win, but I tied is always better than a loss," she said. "The pressure is off [because we have the playoff spot], however we still want to win and get a chance to play at home."

Looking back to her four years she said she tried not to cry as she reminisced.

"I think that our team has been as close as ever this year, and it's been so enjoyable; I'm so glad that this is the team for the last year," she said.

"Everyone gets along so well and it's like we're a big family."

Her final thoughts on her time were wishing her teammates the best of luck in the future and added "Always a Dino!"

The Dinos have two more games to finish off their 2015 season, but with second-place in the Prairie Division of the Canada West league they have their playoff-position secure. Pak and Vernon both said despite the guaranteed spot they are still going to go into their next two games with a fight and are hoping to clinch the home-turf advantage on October 31 for playoffs.
