WINNIPEG – The visiting University of Calgary Dinos kicked off their regular season on a positive note after posting a 3-1 (22-25, 25-18, 33-31, 25-21) victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen Saturday evening at the Dr. David F. Anderson Gymnasium in Winnipeg.
Fourth year outside hitter
Curtis Stockton led the Dinos with 20 kills and finished the match with a hitting percentage of .548. Stockton also served up a match high four service aces. Fifth year outside hitter
Connor Frehlich had 16 kills.
Fifth year middle Brendan Black had a match high 21 kills to lead the Wesmen. Third year outside David Bommersbach had 13 kills.
Winnipeg was on their game in the opening set finishing with a hitting percentage of .484 with only two hitting errors as they went on to win the opening set 25-22.
In the second set the Dinos hitting machine was in full force as they eclipsed a hitting percentage of .444 and keeping the Wesmen off balance in a 25-18 set win to even the match.
Winnipeg gained the early advantage in a dramatic third set leading 16-15 at the technical timeout. Calgary came back and were on verge of winning the set leading 24-22 late but Winnipeg answered back. Both teams exchanged points to 31-31 when Calgary scored closed out the set on a
Ivan Kartev kill followed by a
Keith West service ace to give the Dinos the third set by a score of 33-31.
In the the fourth set both teams had several attacking errors but the Dinos were able to do just enough to win the fourth set 25-21 and the match in four sets.
The teams will wrap up their series on Sunday afternoon. Scheduled start time is 2:30 p.m.
