CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos defeated the University of Winnipeg Wesmen 3-2 (19-25, 32-30, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12) in a Sunday afternoon affair at the Duckworth Centre in Winnipeg.

The win combined with Calgary's 3-1 victory on Saturday improves their record to 2-0. Winnipeg with the loss falls to 0-2 early on in the Canada West regular season standings.

Third year outside hitter Keith West led the Dinos with 21 kills. Fourth year outside Curtis Stockton added 16 kills. Connor Frehlich had four service aces while Ivan Kartev and Sean Martin each had five blocks.

David Bommersbach led the Wesmen with a match high 24 kills. Brendan Black was next with 16. Libero Logan Brennan had a match high 13 digs.

Winnipeg had things going their way in the opening stages of the match, leading 16-10 at the technical timeout. The Wesmen held off any offensive threat by Calgary, going on to win the first set 25-19.

The second set was one for the ages. Winnipeg held a 22-18 lead late in the set until a hot serving Connor Frehlich served up two aces during a 4-0 run to tie the score at 22-22. The teams exchanged points to 30-29 in Winnipeg's favor but back to back errors gave Calgary a 31-30 and another service ace by Frehlich gave Calgary the second set at 32-30.

Set number three was as close as the previous set with the teams exchanging points to 19-18 advantage for the Wesmen. Calgary went on to outscore Winnipeg 6-1 down the stretch to win the third set 25-19.

Winnipeg's third year outside hitter David Bommersbach put on a display in the fourth set. Bommersbach had six kills early on to give the Wesmen a 16-13 lead at the technical timeout. Bommersbach had another kill to give the Wesmen their largest lead of the set at 20-15 and soon after almost fittingly Bommersbach pounded the set winning point to give the Wesmen a 25-21 set win to force a fifth set.

The fifth set started out even as the teams exchanged points to 6-6. Calgary scored four unanswered points to lead 10-6. Winnipeg cut the deficit to one at 12-11 on a kill by Josh McKay. The Dinos scored three of the final points to win the deciding set 15-12.
