CALGARY- A late surge by the No. 10 University of Calgary Dinos fell short on Saturday afternoon at the Father David Bauer Arena as they lost their second in a row to the University of Regina Cougars 5-4.
The Dinos were looking for vengeance against the Cougars after falling to them in overtime Friday evening, but it would the Cougars who were successful in their final matchup against the Dinos.
"We played more to our systems and kept that third man high," explained second year forward Jessyka Holt. "We gave up on it for a couple of shifts though and that's when they capitalized."
It didn't take the Cougars long to get on the scoreboard Saturday afternoon as Emma Waldenberger walked in from the blue and slide the puck between the post and Carissa Fischer.
The Dinos were quick to respond when Jayme Clark pulled Jennifer Schmidt across her crease to make the first save only to have Kate Lumley knock in the rebound and even the score up at one.
Mid-way through the first Regina pulled ahead 2-1. Kylie Kupper picked up the puck that was fumbled by a Dino on the blue line, walked in and scored just below Fischer's glove.
Calgary looked to tie the game mid-way through the middle stanza. Jenna Smith scrambled with the puck in front of Schmidt before it landed on Heather Berzins' stick and ultimately in the back of the net.
The Cougars reclaimed their lead three minutes later. Natasha Kostenko carried the puck in from center ice, beat three Dinos before going five hole and in on Fischer to end her afternoon. Hayley Dowling replaced Fischer in the Dinos' net after the Cougars third goal.
Regina continued their scoring momentum into the third period. Kelly Regnier circled behind the Dinos net before finding Bailey Braden in the high slot who stepped in and scored her fifth of the year on the ice, just inside the post.
The Cougars looked to cement their lead with four minutes remaining in the third period. Kostenko controlled the puck on a two-on-one into the Dinos zone using a Dino defender as a screen, Dowling made the initial save but couldn't stop Caitlin Dempsey from putting the puck in, giving the Cougars a three goal lead.
Calgary battled to cut the lead, pulling Dowling with two minutes left for an extra attacker. With just under a minute to play off of a face off to the right of Schmidt, Chelsea Peterson found the puck and made no mistake beating Schmidt high glove side to cut the Cougars lead to two.
The Dinos would find the back of the net once more with 17 seconds remaining on the clock. Berzins collected her second of the afternoon on a pass from Holt before turning and firing the puck along the ice to beat Schmidt. That would be as close as the Dinos would get to tying the game.
"With the extra attacker on the ice we put all of our pressure to the net and got our shots through," said Holt. "We were successful, but it wasn't enough in the end."
Calgary now falls to a record of 13-6-5 after this afternoon's lose, while Regina improves to 13-9-2.
The Cougars will host the Mount Royal University Cougars next weekend, Feb. 6-7 in Regina.
The Dinos will play a home-and-home series against their provincial rivals the University of Alberta Panda's. The Dinos will play their last regular season home game on Saturday Feb. 7th at the Father David Bauer. Puck will drop against the Panda's at 6 p.m.
