EDMONTON - The MacEwan University Griffins women's volleyball team knocked off the University of Calgary Dinos 3-2 (25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 15-25, 18-16) on Friday night at City Center Gymnasium.
Both teams came out of the gate with little energy, but were mechanical in their play, resulting in a seesaw first set that was won 25-21 by the Griffins. Both teams displayed strong defence at the net as each registered three blocks in the set. Madison Porisky led the way for the Griffins with five kills while the Dinos utilized a balanced attack with three players finishing the set with three kills.
The seesaw battle continued in the early stages of the second set before the Dinos went on a 10-2 run. The Griffins played better down the stretch but dropped the set to the Dinos 25-21. Kate Pexman and Ali Woolley continued to lead the way for the Dinos with four kills apiece in the second set.
The Griffins found their energy early in the third set, opening on an 8-2 run. After a strong rally by the Dinos the Griffins were able to hold on to take the set 25-23. Jordhynn Guy distributed the ball effectively for the Dinos as she picked up 12 assists in the set.
In the fourth set the Dinos reestablished their blocking and forced the match to a fifth and final set. In total the Dinos registered six blocks to take the set 25-15.
After the Griffins appeared to be in control throughout the fifth set a late 7-0 Dinos run tied the set at 14. A three point run to end the game allowed the Griffins to finish off the Dinos.
Christina Campbell finished with 14 kills and six block assists to earn player of the game honours for the Griffins. Earning the honours for the Dinos was Amber Brown who finished the game with 16 digs.
Teams will return Saturday night for the rematch. The game is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at City Center Gymnasium.
