Dinos swept up by Griffins in another five-setter

EDMONTON - It was just another five set thriller kind of day for the MacEwan University Griffins as they defeated the University of Calgary Dinos 3-2 (25-18, 21-25, 25-20, 24-26, 15-12).

Both teams displayed a higher energy level in the second evenly matched of the weekend. Madison Porisky served the Griffins to a 7-0 run in the first set to take an early 12-4 lead. As a team, the Griffins served tough throughout the set to earn the 25-18 win. Kate Pexman paced the Dinos with five kills.

In the second set, Erika Myhre ran an effective offense after replacing Jordhynn Guy, finishing with nine assists to lead the Dinos to a 25-21 win. Cassidy Kinsella picked up five kills to keep the Griffins close.

Once again a strong service run gave the Griffins an early lead as Rebecca Martin sparked a 7-0 run. Eight kills by Christina Campbell allowed the Griffins to take the third set 25-20. Beth Vinnell and Jaylynn Moffatt paced the Dinos attack with five and four kills respectively.

Five kills by Ali Woolley during a 7-2 run earned the Dinos a 14-9 lead in the fourth, but a late push by the Griffins fell just short as the Dinos took the set 26-24 to push the match the distance.

In the final set Campbell continued to lead the way for the Griffins as she picked up another six kills to finish the match with 22. The Dinos made a late run on the strength of three Woolley kills but the comeback fell just short as the Griffins took the set 15-12.

Woolley finished with a team-high 17 kills and 18 digs to earn player of the game honours for the Dinos, while the Griffins award went to Campbell for her late game heroics.

Next up the Griffins head to Regina to take on the Cougars with the first match scheduled for Friday evening at 4:00 p.m. The Dinos return home to host the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds starting Friday at 6:00 p.m.
