Golden Bears close out Dinos in gutsy Game 2

| By:
BOX SCORE EDMONTON – The No. 3 University of Calgary Dinos left everything on the ice on Saturday night at the Clare Drake Arena. In the end, the No. 1-ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears claimed their second-straight Canada West title with a 2-1 win.

After a one-sided affair on Friday night, the Dinos gave everything they had in the rematch. Calgary tied the game early in the second period, but surrendered a late second-period goal which ended up the game winner. Jamie Crooks and Torrie Dyck scored for Alberta while Dylan Walchuk found the back of the net for Calgary.

The Golden Bears won the best-of-three series 2-0 and advance to the CIS University Cup in Saskatoon. The loss brings to a close the most successful season for the Dinos since 1997. Tonight was the final game in the CIS careers' of Mark Stojan, Cory Pritz and Taylor Stefishen. Blake Clement also graduates as a fifth-year player.

In similar fashion to Game 1, the Golden Bears netted the first goal of the night just over a minute in. First-year forward Crooks connected on a low-shot on Jacob DeSerres, recording his fifth of the playoffs.

Despite trailing after the first period, the Dinos had a much better performance. The team grinded out the period, putting a number of solid chances at the Alberta net.

Hard work would pay off for Calgary in the second period. As the team continued to chip away at the Alberta defence, the Dinos were able to tie the game on a goalmouth tap-in. Spencer Edwards threw the puck towards the goal where the rookie Walchuk jumped on it and scored his first of the post season at 2:20 of the middle frame.

As both teams fought for territory in both ends, it looks as though the game would be tied going into the final period of regulation. With less than a minute left in the period, Dyck got behind the defence and beat DeSerres on a breakaway to restore the one-goal advantage for the home team. The tally was the fourth of the playoffs for Dyck.

In the third period, Calgary made a push to try and tie the game. Their best chance came with 13 minutes left as Walker Wintoneak hit the post. The Dinos pulled the goaltender in the final minute but were unable to light the lamp.

Alberta outshot Calgary 27-16. DeSerres made 25 saves while Luke Siemens turned away 15 pucks in the win.

The Dinos were 1-4 on the power play, while the Golden Bears went 0-2 on the man advantage.
