| By:
BOX SCORE EDMONTON – Five goals allowed in the first period deflated Game 1 for the No. 3 University of Calgary Dinos as the University of Alberta Golden Bears took the series opener 8-1 at the Clare Drake Arena on Friday night.

Alberta scored early and often in the first game of the Canada West Final. Eight different players netted multi-point nights for the Golden Bears with team captain Sean Ringrose leading the way with a goal and an assist.

The Golden Bears now leads the best-of-three series 1-0. The series will continue tomorrow night with Game 2 at 6 p.m. at the Clare Drake Arena. If necessary, Game 3 will be played on Sunday, March. 9 with a 6 p.m. puck drop.

With home ice in the championship series for the second-straight year, the Golden Bears came on like an avalanche as they took a 5-0 lead after 20 minutes.

It all started when Alberta was awarded a power play in the opening minutes of the contest. The home team wasted no time scoring on the man advantage and would eventually hold a 4-0 advantage midway through the period. netminder Jacob DeSerres was chased from the net after facing 10 shots and was replaced by Kris Lazaruk.

While the play began to balance out in the second period, the Dinos still struggled to generate offence. James Dobrowolski tallied the lone goal of the second period as the Golden Bears maintained their stranglehold on the game.

Calgary scored their lone goal of the evening just under five minutes into the third period. As the Dinos drove towards the net, Kevin King hopped on a rebound and sent a shot past Kurtis Mucha. Dylan Walchuk and Walker Wintoneak notched assists on the goal.

Alberta ended the game with two more markers to round out the scoring.

Alberta outshot Calgary 32-24. DeSerres made six saves, before being replaced by Lazaruk who stopped 18 shots. Reigning CIS goaltender of the year Mucha turned away 23 pucks in the win.

The Dinos were 0-3 on the power play, while the Golden Bears went 4-5 on the man advantage.
