CALGARY – A pair of fluky goals gave the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds an upset victory over the fourth-ranked University of Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.
In yet another game that proved anyone can win on any given night in the Canada West, a shorthanded Dinos' defence had their hands full with the Thunderbirds' top line. All but two of UBC's goals on the weekend came from the line of Anthony Bardaro, Manraj Hayer and Cole Wilson. Hayer tipped in Saturday's game winning goal in the second period.
"We played pretty well but as the coaches explained, there is a fine line between winning and losing," said
Ryan Harrison. "That line and others have a lot of skill. Bardaro was very hard to contain."
Calgary finishes the first semester with a 13-5-0 record and four points out of first place. UBC ends a five-game losing streak with the victory and improves to 7-8-3.
"No matter what team we play, they can beat us," noted Harrison. "They have beaten us twice now, we have to be prepared to play every night going forward."
Making his return from injury,
Aspen Sterzer opened the scoring with his first CIS tally.
Cain Franson initiated the play as he flipped the puck to his fellow rookie forward and allowed Sterzer to knock the puck over Eric Williams from in front of the net. Playing defence on a depleted blue line,
Spencer Edwards also notched an assist on the play at 3:16 of the first period.
After being denied on a penalty shot in overtime a night earlier, Bardaro got a little revenge against the Dinos and evened the score with just over a minute left in the opening frame. A turnover in the Calgary end allowed UBC to keep the puck inside as Bardaro beat
Jacob DeSerres from a tough angle for his fourth of the season.
Similar to Friday night, UBC controlled the second period and were able to take a 2-1 edge on their first power play of the game. After a cross crease attempt by Wilson went wide, the Thunderbirds maintained pressure and scored as Wilson got the puck back and fired a blue line attempt that deflected off the skate of a leaping Hayer and in. The goal was Hayer's third of the campaign.
In the final five minutes of the third, the Dinos hemmed the Thunderbirds in their own end and dictated the play. Williams stood on his head in the final minutes and kept the puck out of the net the rest of the way. Calgary's best chance came on a point shot by
Davis Vandane which was batted down.
Kevin King was in position with an opportunity to bury it, but the UBC netminder kept his pad on the ice.
Luke Lockhart scored an empty netter in the final minute to round out the scoring and secure UBC a three point weekend.
UBC outshot Calgary 30-27. The Dinos went 0-for-4 on the power play, while the Thunderbirds went 1-for-4.
The Dinos return to action in 2015 when they begin a home-and-home set against the Alberta Golden Bears from January 3-4.
