CALGARY – An overtime winner by
Chris Collins put to end a crazy night at the Father David Bauer Arena on Friday night as the No. 4 University of Calgary Dinos edge the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds 4-3.
Minutes before Collins scored on a backdoor pass by
Spencer Edwards, the game could have ended on a 2-man breakaway by UBC. That scoring chance never materialized though as a bizarre play handed the Thunderbirds a penalty shot they would not score on.
"I didn't even see what happened – I turned around and the net was off. All I know is they got a penalty shot and we came back and scored," explained Calgary bench boss
Mark Howell. "We did not have enough of a killer instinct tonight. We let them start skating and they took the momentum from us.
"Our guys know they have to be a lot better."
The win in overtime improves the Dinos' record to 13-4-0 and keeps them within two points of first place. UBC drops to 6-8-3 on the campaign.
After a 20 minute delay due to snowy weather conditions in Calgary, the Dinos wasted little time scoring the game's first goal. A shot from the blue line by
Max Ross sailed wide of the net but deflected off fifth-year forward
Colton Grant and past goaltender Matt Hewitt just 31 seconds into the contest. The goal was Grant's first of the season.
The next seven minutes would not go Calgary's way. UBC fired the next six shots on goal and shutout the Dinos for eight minutes before they registered their second shot of the game. Thankfully for the home side, the Thunderbirds could not get anything past
Jacob DeSerres – who was making his second consecutive start in goal.
With a power play half way through the first, Calgary extended their lead. A perimeter shot by
Davis Vandane appeared to be covered by Hewitt, but Edwards continued to pursue the puck and poked his third of the season past the goal line.
UBC had a much more aggressive second period and were able to tie the game.
The Thunderbirds made it a one-goal game 4:20 into the middle frame as Manraj Hayer streaked in from the left side and threw the puck in front of the goal. Catching the pass was Cole Wilson who roofed his attempt past DeSerres for his fifth marker of the year.
Carrying the play, UBC evened the score at the 14:43 mark. Wilson's hard shot from the right side went into the feet of
Kodie Curran and buckled the senior rearguard. The puck ricocheted off Curran back to Wilson who drove to the net but lost the puck at the last second. With him though was Hayer who collected the garbage and netted his second of the season.
Chris Collins gave the Dinos a 3-2 lead at the 14:20 mark of the third as he converted on a clapper from inside the blue line for his sixth of the season. UBC refused to go away though and tied the game to send it to overtime on a goal by Nate Fleming at the 16:39 mark.
A 2-on-0 breakaway for the Thunderbirds in overtime resulted in one of the most peculiar plays of the season. As two UBC players zoned in on DeSerres, the Calgary goaltender knocked the net out of position to end the opportunity. While the T-Birds continued to the net, scored, and celebrated accordingly, the referee signalled a penalty shot. Anthony Bardaro took the shot for UBC and was denied on a great glove save by DeSerres.
"It happened so quickly. It was a clear cut play, I thought about it quickly and had to make a decision," said DeSerres.
Only minutes later, Collins scored his second of the game to clinch a win for the Dinos.
UBC outshot Calgary 24-23. The Dinos went 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Thunderbirds went 0-for-4.
Calgary and UBC will go head-to-head again tomorrow night at the Father David Bauer Arena. Puck drop is 6:00pm.
