EDMONTON - The University of Calgary Dinos grabbed their fifth consecutive victory Sunday afternoon, shutting out the MacEwan Griffins 4-0 in Edmonton.
The Griffins began the match with energy, earning a dangerous free kick in the fourth minute that was headed just wide of the net by Jonathan Alberkant.
The Dinos weathered the early pressure, before countering with pressure of their own.
In the 29th minute, the Dinos'
Dominic Russo charged in on keeper Adam Hajji, forcing him to lunge for the ball. Hajjji was able to break up the scoring chance, but was unable to control the rebound that rolled dangerously close to the net, before being cleared by Griffins defender Matt Hanson.
In the 33rd minute, the Dinos would become the beneficiary of a fortunate deflection, as
Andrew Hood's shot deflected off Hajji and straight on the foot of
Dominic Russo who tapped home marker for a 1-0 advantage.
The second half would start much like the first with the Griffins earning a solid scoring chance off the boot of Alberkant, who sailed his shot less than two feet over the crossbar.
From there on, the match was dominated by the Dinos with
Andrew Hood scoring his fourth goal of the season in the 55th minute.
Mitch Melanson, with a free kick bent into the top left corner, and
Lindon Fedorick, intercepting a pass from the keeper before tapping the ball into the bottom right corner, rounded out the scoring for the Dinos.
The Griffins (3-5-2) will enjoy a bye week, while the Dinos (5-3) host the Mount Royal Cougars in a mid-week match-up 8:30 p.m. Tuesday at McMahon Stadium in Calgary.
