Dinos take late-night affair versus Cougars

CALGARY – A change in venue and time couldn't stop the streaking University of Calgary Dinos on Tuesday evening at McMahon Stadium as they defeated their crosstown rivals, the Mount Royal University Cougars 3-1.

Playing their third game in four days, the Dinos kept on rolling, winning their sixth-straight game. Andrew Hood and Dominic Russo continued to excel in attacking roles for Calgary, scoring two of the team's three goals, while Kieran Lane-Oppenheim also scored for the Dinos. Trevor McPhee was the only Mount Royal player to get a ball past Colin Hasick, who won his sixth-straight decision since taking over starting duties in net.

"We have come a long way since the beginning of the season, we sorted things out defensively and now we are just rolling," explained fifth-year Dinos head coach Brian McDonnell. "The big pitch hinders us a bit, there are a few more holes and ground you have to cover, but I am really impressed with our guys for picking up three wins in four days."

Recently named Dinos' athlete of the week, Russo got the Dinos off to a good start when he found the back of the net in the 11th minute. The third-year forward heaved his way past a pair of Mount Royal defenders before depositing his fourth goal of the year behind goalkeeper Kamil Zielinski.

The tempo slowed down in the middle portion of the first half, but the Cougars tied the game on a penalty kick in the 38th minute. McPhee took the shot for Mount Royal and made no mistake for his first tally of the season.

Aiming to take sole possession of second place in the Prairie Division, Calgary came out with extra energy in the second half and were rewarded. Taking a cross from Russo, third-year Dino Lane-Oppenheim picked up the go-ahead goal with a shot from in close.

The Dinos earned an important insurance marker with just over 15 minutes to play. Given a penalty kick of their own, Calgary turned to their top goal scorer Hood, who converted for his fifth goal of the season.

Calgary now sits alone in second place with a record of 6-3-0. The Alberta Golden Bears sit in third, three points behind, but have already played one more game than the Dinos. The top two teams in each division will host first round matchups in the Canada West playoffs.

"It is something to aspire to, we told the guys before that there is still everything to play for – nothing has been clinched yet – and second spot is there," noted McDonnell when asked about the playoff race. "They showed up today knowing that is something they can work for."

Mount Royal slips to 1-7-1 and remain last in the Prairie Division.

The Dinos outshot the Cougars 13-11. Hasick turned aside five shots in the Calgary net, while Zielinski made seven saves for Mount Royal.

These two teams will continue Crowchild Classic competition on Saturday afternoon at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch. The final home game of the Dinos' regular season gets underway at 2:15pm.
