BOX SCORE EDMONTON – With three goals in under three minutes in the second period, the No. 7 University of Alberta Pandas paved their way to an eventual 4-0 win over the University of Calgary Dinos, Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena.
Third-year forward Janelle Froehler had a two-point night for the Pandas, netting a goal and an assist. Senior forwards Katie Stewart and Montanna Noyes scored singles, as did third-year Lindsey Cunningham. Sophomore goaltender Lindsey Post made 19 saves in her conference-leading seventh shutout of the season, having played in 14 games so far.
In the loss, senior netminder
Amanda Tapp had 12 saves before letting in three successive shots to chase her from the Calgary net.
The Dinos now have a 10-12-2 record which puts last season's Canada West silver medallists in the sixth and final playoff spot but falling behind fifth-place Regina. Alberta's four points on the weekend, their record improving to 16-5-3, had them keep pace with top-seeded UBC.
After a quiet opening frame, the Pandas put on more pressure in the second, Tapp coming up big on a Kirsten Toth shot in the slot five minutes into the middle frame.
At the 7:31 mark, however, a goalmouth scramble led to a ricocheting puck that hit Dinos and Pandas both before inching over the line into the far corner of the net.
Fifty seconds later, Alberta doubled the lead when Cunningham's point shot powered its way through Tapp for the forward's third of the season.
On a delayed penalty, veteran forward Jayden Skoye grabbed the puck behind the Calgary net, quickly feeding it to Froehler who tucked it in the near corner before Tapp could even react, making it 3-0 at the 10:24 mark of the second period.
With Tapp's departure, rookie 'tender
Hayley Dowling then manned the Dino goal for the rest of the game but Alberta wasn't done with its offence in the middle 20 minutes just yet.
Third-year forward Tess Houston, who tallied the overtime winner in Calgary on Friday night, found Noyes in the slot, the Onoway, Alta. native redirecting the pass for her fourth of the season with 53.7 seconds left on the clock.
Although the Dinos outshot the Pandas 10-6 in the final frame, they could not find an answer against the conference's best defence, improving to 27 goals against in 24 games, or an average of 1.13. Post now has a 0.90 goals against average and .946 save percentage on the season.
Calgary finished 0-5 on the power-play while Alberta went 0-6.
Alberta heads on the road next weekend to square off against the Lethbridge Pronghorns while Calgary will return home to host the Saskatchewan Huskies.
