BOX SCORE EDMONTON – Fifth-year Golden Bear Jordan Baker banked 23 points to lead the No.4 ranked University of Alberta to an 82-72 win over the Calgary Dinos on Saturday night at the Saville Community Sports Centre in Edmonton.
Setting the school's all-time scoring record, Baker added nine rebounds and five assists to the 23 points he scored, and was given the game ball and the mesh from the hoop he scored the record breaking point in, after the contest.
Teammates Kenny Otieno, Czar Robotham and Joel Friesen scored 13, 11 and 10 points respectively, as the Bears simply proved to be too much offence for the Dinos on Saturday.
It was a different story from Friday night, when Alberta's defence pressured the Dinos into 21 turnovers, which resulted in a lopsided win. Calgary returned on Saturday full of adjustments, and protected the ball much better. They were also sharper shooting the ball, compared to Friday, but the Golden Bears simply had too many weapons firing for Calgary to keep up.
Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson was incredibly sharp on Saturday, taking 20 shots from the field, and hitting 40% of them, including six of 11 long bombs.
Philip Barndt added 19 points in the loss, but the Dinos next highest scorer topped out at nine points. And, while Ogungbemi-Jackson was hot from outside the arc, he accounted for 67% of Calgary's scoring from deep, whereas the Golden Bears connected on nine deep balls, same as Calgary, but got no more than three from any one player, including three from Otieno and a pair from Robotham.
Alberta, however, did lose the rebound battle on Saturday, as Calgary picked up 35 to the Bears' 33, including 15 to 10 on the offensive glass.
After the Bears outscored the Dinos 23-17 in the first quarter, including Baker's record setting points, Calgary stormed back in the second quarter and outscored the home side 22-17 to make it a one point game at half-time, with Alberta in front 40-39.
The Bears owned the third quarter, getting 24 points to Calgary's 15, which set the table for the fourth quarter. Alberta just had to match the Dinos bucket for bucket, which they did, in order to ride out the win. In the end, after an 18-18 fourth quarter, the Bears wound up with an 82-72 victory.
At 14-2, Alberta has clinched a playoff spot and holds down first place in the Prairie Division, four points ahead of the second place Saskatchewan Huskies. Calgary, meanwhile, slips to 5-11, and sits in sixth position. The Golden Bears host Mount Royal and UNBC next weekend, while Calgary faces Pacific Division power Victoria, as well as UBC.
