Dinos fall to No. 4 Golden Bears

| By:
BOX SCORE EDMONTON - In their first appearance ever at the Saville Community Sports Centre, the University of Calgary Dinos fell into a red-hot fourth-ranked Alberta Golden Bears squad, falling 95-66 Friday night.

Kenny Otieno and Joel Friesen combined to hit eight three-pointers and score 41 points for the Bears.

The win improves Alberta's record to 13-2, and leaves them solo in first place of the Prairie Division. They are two points up on the Saskatchewan Huskies, and six points up on the third and fourth place Winnipeg Wesmen and Lethbridge Pronghorns, who each have 10-5 records.

Calgary, meanwhile, slips to 5-10 on the season and seems destined to miss the playoffs. They trail a post-season berth by 10 points with just seven games remaining in the conference season.

Although the close to 2,000 fans in attendance were hoping to see fifth-year Golden Bear Jordan Baker become the program's career conference scoring leader – he entered the game needing 17 points to break the record, and ended with 12 points on the night – they were treated to an offensive outburst all the same, as well as defensive clinic.

The Golden Bears pressured the Dinos into 21 turnovers, while committing just 11 of their own. When they had the ball, they were deadly, shooting 49% from the field, 39% from beyond the arc and 81% from the charity stripe.

Led by Otieno's 21 points, Alberta was simply too much for Calgary to handle. Friesen, making his Saville Centre debut after transferring to the Bears in 2012, connected on five of seven three-point attempts and finished with 20 points. Baker, who now needs just five points to earn his 10th team record, had another solid night, banking 12 points, five assists, two blocks and eight rebounds.

The youthful Dinos, who have no fifth-year student-athletes, were paced by 18 points from Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson. The fourth-year guard also had a team high nine rebounds, and was 10-11 from the free throw line. Josh Turner came off the bench to give Calgary 16 points, but the Dinos had trouble shooting the ball, connecting on just 18% from deep and 39% from the field.

Friesen got the game rolling in the first quarter, by scoring nine of his 20 points, in the opening 10 minutes, including a pair of treys. In fact, it was Alberta's ability from outside that pushed them in front in the opening quarter. They connected on 50% of their long ball attempts, while Calgary hit one of seven.

The Golden Bears ran away with it in the second, outscoring their provincial rivals 29-13 for a 50-28 lead at half-time. Calgary committed eight turnovers in the second quarter, most of which were converted to easy points, including Mamadou Gueye's steal and breakaway dunk.

In the third, Alberta's depth simply took over. Sahr Saffa recorded six points, Oteino added five, and guard Czar Robotham, who joined Alberta in December, chipped in, as the Bears went deep into their bench to protect the lead.

Heading into the fourth with a 72-46 advantage, the Bears were able to continue to run their bench and salt away the victory.

The Bears and Dinos will tip-off at 7 p.m. on Saturday for game two of the weekend series.
