Dinos no match for No. 8 Huskies

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – The No. 8 Saskatchewan Huskies completed the sweep of the University of Calgary Dinos on Jan. 18 when they defeated them 96-83 at Jack Simpson Gym.

This is the Dinos fifth loss in a row as they drop to 5-9. The Huskies improve to 11-3 on the season thus far.

Josh Owen-Thomas his best game of the season with a game-high 21 points and seven rebounds on the night. Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson added 17 more for the Dinos while Jasdeep Gill recorded 12. Josh Turner and Philip Barndt scored 11 and 10 points, respectively.

For the Huskies, Ben Baker was the high scorer with 20 points and he was the only player to earn a double double with 15 boards, followed by 18 points from Matt Forbes. Stephon Lamar recorded 16 while Andrew Henry and Dadrian Collins scored 15 each for Saskatchewan.

Leading from the get-go, the Huskies earned a seven point lead at 10-3 and never looked back, holding onto that lead through to the end of the quarter. The Dinos, originally down by ten, would close the gap to seven at the buzzer thanks to Ogungbemi-Jackson's first points of the game from beyond the arc.

Halfway through the second, Calgary found themselves down by 12, unable to shut down the Huskies offence early on. It was Jasdeep Gill who shifted the momentum for the Dinos as he sunk a three-pointer to get them within nine.

From there, the Dinos went to work, slowly closing the gap within the final minutes of the half. A hard drive from Barndt, followed by two free throws in Calgary's next possession got the Dinos within one at 36-35. The half would end 38-35 in favour of the Huskies.

In a lack lustre third quarter for the Dinos, the Huskies extended their lead to a game-high 22 points in the final minutes. Owen-Thomas was the first Dino to hit double digits with 13 when he scored his second three-pointer on the night. Saskatchewan was able to hold leading Canada West scorer Ogungbemi-Jackson to just eight points about halfway through the third. The quarter would end 76-59 with a lot of ground for the Dinos to make up.

In the fourth, it seemed anything the Dinos could do, the Huskies could respond. With the bench and the crowd trying to get Calgary into it, Saskatchewan would continually silence the Dinos supporters as their offence seemed to be unstoppable. Five Huskies had already reached double digits.

Saskatchewan went on to sweep the Dinos and win their 11th of the season by a score of 96-83.

Calgary will take on the No. 3 Alberta Golden Bears next weekend on the road, while the Huskies will return home to face the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Both games go down Jan. 24-25.
