BOX SCORE CALGARY – Fifth-year senior
Tamara Jarrett put up 21 points to lead the University of Calgary Dinos to a dominant 87-56 win over the Mount Royal Cougars Saturday night at Kenyon Court, extending their win streak to 10 games.
Jarrett added 13 rebounds for the double-double as the Dinos completely outmuscled the Cougars on the glass, hauling in 24 offensive and 56 total rebounds against just 31 for Mount Royal. Calgary keeps pace in the Prairie Division with the win and now sits at 10-2, while Mount Royal's sophomore CIS season continues to be a struggle as the Cougars fall to 1-11 on the year.
The Cougars knew they would be in tough against a solid Calgary squad who had won their last nine games in a row. The Dinos jumped out to a 13-5 run to start the first quarter. Calgary's up-tempo pace confused the Cougar's defensive assignments and the Dinos capitalized. After the first quarter Mount Royal trailed 18-11. Mount Royal tried to calm the pace and work the ball around but they just could not win the battles on the boards. A big run put the Dinos ahead by a score of 41-25 at the half.
The second half was no better for the Cougars and their fans as the Dinos continually had their way with the Cougars in the offensive end. One bright spot did emerge for the Cougars and that was the sharpshooting of Danica Rybachuk. The fourth year guard knocked down 17 points including two from beyond the arc. Some good ball movement showed some signs of hope for the Cougars in the future but this night was all Dinos.
The Dinos are back in the Jack Simpson Gym next weekend when they host the Saskatchewan Huskies for a two-game set Jan. 17-18
