BOX SCORE EDMONTON - In another chapter of the Battle of Alberta, the University of Calgary Dinos thwarted the University of Alberta Pandas' attempt at a southern Alberta weekend sweep, scoring three late goals in 13 minutes to earn a 3-3 tie, Sunday afternoon at Foote Field.
Fourth-year forward Julia Ignacio assisted on all three Alberta tallies, two notched by third-year forward Jessie Candlish (giving her three in two games) and a single scored by third-year midfielder Laura Kautz (her second in as many games).
Rookie forward
Jordan Smith also tallied in her second-straight match yet it was two own goals by Alberta that drew the Dinos even with their provincial rivals. Freshman netminder
Samantha Chang-Foidl, replacing starting goalie
Lauren Good at halftime, made three saves in a relief effort to earn the visitors a point in the standings.
The Pandas got on the board early, Ignacio serving up a perfect cross along the ground to Candlish who fired the ball dead center into the net in the ninth minute.
In a virtual replay, the Edmonton native doubled the lead in the 29
th minute, this time directing the ball into the far corner off the Ignacio pass.
A former University of Memphis student, Ignacio then found herself on a close-quarter three-on-one in the 39
th minute, finding Kautz in the slot for a commanding 3-0 lead.
At halftime, Alberta held a 13-3 shot advantage and looked to claim their second-straight victory, having beaten the Lethbridge Pronghorns by a 3-0 score on Saturday, but after a couple of saves by Chang-Foidl a third of the way through the second half, Calgary took full control of a momentum swing.
Just inside the 18-yard box, Smith curled a shot inside the far post in the 67
th minute while senior forward
Tessa Miller drew an assist for her second point in as many games.
Miller's corner kick in the 74
th minute led to a couple more scoring chances,
Andrea Stinson's attempt blocked by the Pandas defence but Smith's rebound got over Alberta goalkeeper Kelti Biggs in the crease yet was about to be blocked again by the defence. Unfortunately for the home team, third-year defender Victoria Saccomani's header attempt to clear the ball went backwards and into the net.
Six minutes later, another Miller corner kick gave way to a scramble in front of the Pandas' net where the ball bounced off several players of both squads before the last ricochet off Alberta drew the teams even at three goals apiece.
The Dinos homeopener will host the Manitoba Bisons and Winnipeg Wesmen on Saturday and Sunday, respectively.
