BOX SCORE LETHBRIDGE –
Izak Lawrence's goal in the 42
nd minute proved to be all the scoring the visiting Calgary Dinos would need, spoiling the Lethbridge Pronghorns home opener with a 1-0 victory Sunday afternoon in Canada West men's soccer action.
The 1-0 win also completed the weekend sweep for the Calgary Dinos after a 3-2 win yesterday in Calgary.
A day after playing through sloppy wet conditions in the first game of the Home-and-Home series in Calgary, today was near perfect playing conditions, with warm temperatures and a slight breeze.
Early pressure favored the Dinos from the opening whistle but the 'Horns settled in after seven minutes of play. Despite both teams pushing the ball forward when they had opportunities, quality chances were scarce.
Dinos
Dominick Zator threatened to break the deadlock first but his header from a rebound sailed over the bar.
'Horns midfielder Gui Costa had the first quality chance for the home squad but his blast from deep in the Dinos box hit the side of the net.
Lawrence took a pass from
Kieran Hay high in the penalty area and half-volleyed the ball in the far right corner past a helpless Tyler Boast with only three minutes remaining in the opening half.
Boast made three consecutive saves in the final four minutes to keep the 'Horns in striking distance but the 'Horns could not break through the Dinos defense to get the equalizer.
Both team finished the game with 19 shot attempts but less than half found the mark for both teams. Boast made seven saves in the loss, while his counterpart
Hunter Brett turned away all five Pronghorn shots to earn the clean sheet.
The Dinos are at home for a pair of games next weekend, hosting the Alberta Golden Bears.
