CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, taking a season-opening 3-1 win over the Mount Royal Cougars Saturday afternoon at the Mount Royal field.
The win was the first as a CIS head coach for Dinos bench boss Troye Flannery, who will take his team north Sunday to face the University of Alberta Pandas.
It was the first installment of the Crowchild Classic for 2013-14, with the University of Calgary taking a 1-0 lead in the all-sport series thanks to the victory.
Less than four minutes into the game the Calgary opened the scoring off a corner kick that was bobbled by a number of defenders until Kira Lee knocked it home to give the Dinos an early lead.
Just five minutes later the Dinos added to their lead after Tessa Miller converted a quick through ball to make the score 2-0 Dinos. The score would remain that way heading into the half.
The Cougars picked up the pace as the second half begun and were rewarded in the 65th minute. Donella Lockhart took a long cross off her chest, side-stepped a defender and buried a laser past the outstretched keeper.
Not even three minutes later Calgary brought their lead back to two as Jordan Smith broke away from the Cougars defender and let go a perfect left footer that found the top left corner.
After Sunday's contest against Alberta in Edmonton, the Dinos will host the Manitoba Bisons in their home opener next Saturday morning at McMahon Stadium.
