BOX SCORE CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos and the University of Winnipeg Wesmen were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw in a feisty affair at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch on Sunday afternoon.
The Dinos found themselves in control of the match for the majority of time. Firing 20 shots on net, Calgary was only able to bury one goal, which was enough for just one point.
Calgary entered the match looking to avenge an agonizing loss in the final five minutes of Saturday's game. Winnipeg was triumphant after capitalizing on a penalty kick that was rewarded off a Calgary handball in the box.
With Sunday's result, Calgary sits in third in the Prairie Division with a 3-4-1 record. With 10 points on the season, the Dinos are two point ahead of Winnipeg who hold a 2-4-2 mark.
The Wesmen were able to establish an early lead as they tried to pick up all six points on the weekend. Oleg Andrushchyshyn delivered a smart pass through a maze of Dinos, finding Kenny Sacramento all alone. The third-year forward broke into the box where he beat
Jordan Unreiner with a shot to the left side of the net.
Five minutes later and in the 10th minute, the home team tied the score. Finishing off a play that began with a throw-in,
Michael McKinnon picked up his second goal in as many games, tallying from in close.
Calgary piled on good pressure for the remainder of the contest, but couldn't find the back of the net as Winnipeg goalkeeper Joshua Partaker stood his ground. The Dinos finished the game with 14 shots on goal, compared to just four by the Wesmen.
Tempers flared between both benches at the end of the game. Cooler heads would prevail though in a match that saw three yellow cards handed out.
Next weekend, Calgary will meet-up with the Mount Royal Cougars for two games in the Crowchild Classic on Oct. 5-6.
The Wesmen will return home for games on Oct. 4-5 versus the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
