BOX SCORE SASKATOON - An early University of Calgary goal proved to be the difference in a 1-0 Dinos victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Sunday in Saskatoon's PotashCorp Park.
Calgary scored the lone goal of the match in the eighth minute after
Kieran Hay took a free kick that landed on the foot of
Jaron Broom. Broom's shot lifted just over an outstretched Huskies' keeper Michal Bandula.
With the win, Calgary improves to 3-3-0, while the Huskies drop to 4-2-0. A day earlier, Saskatchewan won 1-0.
The Huskies had ample chances in the first half to tie the match outshoting the Dinos 10-3. Three times Saskatchewan went wide, once hit the crossbar and was stopped twice by
Jordan Unreiner in the half.
Each team had chances in the second half but neither could convert on the attempts. In the 79
th minute, the Dinos were awarded a free kick 18-yards out, but the shot sailed over the net. Saskatchewan's best shot came in the dying seconds on a corner kick. With everyone in front of the net, the ball bounced off a head and into the hands of Unreiner at the whistle.
Unreiner was once again the best player on the pitch for the Dinos making three saves, while Bandula also stopped for the Huskies. The Huskies outshot the Dinos 16-7 in the match.
The Huskies travel to B.C. to take on the UBC Thunderbirds and Trinity Western Spartans, while Calgary returns home to host the Winnipeg Wesmen.
