Dinos post double digits against Wesmen

| By:
BOX SCORE Calgary – The University of Calgary Dinos scored early and often as they cruised to an 11-0 victory over the University of Winnipeg Wesmen on Sunday afternoon at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch.

Tessa Miller got the ball rolling five minutes in as she bent one past the Wesmens goalkeeper Taylor Thorkelsson.

The flood gates opened from there as the Dinos managed to score an alarming eight goals in the first half. In the first 45 minutes, Ann Stranges produced a hat-trick among her five points on the day, while Nikki Furukawa and Jordan Smith each found the back of the net twice.

"A result like this is unexpected, the Wesmen were coming off a win in their previous game and were in a couple of close fixtures so far," said first-year Dinos head coach Troye Flannery.

With the score seemingly out of reach, the second half gave an opportunity for both clubs to get some playing time for their bench. Calgary brought in four substitutes while Winnipeg changed up three players, including their goalie at the break.

"We made some changes at the half to give some girls an opportunity and to keep chipping away at the details," explained Flannery.

The Dinos potted three more goals in the second half, all coming off the foot of second-year Amy Hockings.  The forward took advantage of a penalty kick in the 57th minute to make it 9-0. Hockings added two more coming in the 72nd and 85th minute to round out the scoring and complete the hat trick.

Coming off a 2012-13 season that saw them finish with a 3-6-3 record, Calgary has now matched their win total from a year ago. The Dinos, now sitting at 3-0-1, are making an impression early in the year that this is a different team.

"I think we are proving we can be a forced to be reckoned with in our conference," shared Stranges. "A lot of people determined we would be eighth or ninth, but we want to go after the No. 1 spot."

Calgary outshot Winnipeg 35-10 in the match.

The Dinos are next in action on Sept. 22 at 12 p.m. as they host the Northern British Columbia Timberwolves. On Sept. 21, Winnipeg visit to their provincial rivals as they battle the Manitoba Bisons.
