BOX SCORE CALGARY – Marcus Johnstone tallied two goals in the first half to lead the No. 6 University of Alberta Golden Bears to a 4-2 win over the University of Calgary Dinos on Sunday afternoon at the West Varsity Soccer Pitch.
With their second win this weekend, Alberta improves their record to 2-0-1 while Calgary drops to 2-2-0 following the sweep.
"This one was very similar to Saturday sadly, we conceded early and we were back behind the eight ball again," said Calgary head coach
Brian McDonnell. "For us, it's about paying attention to the details if we are going to get better next weekend."
Johnstone scored the first goal of the match as he fired one past goalkeeper
Hunter Brett in the 5
th minute. Brett was taking over for
Jordan Unreiner who usually sees the majority of assignments in goal for the Dinos.
The home team tied the game in the 12
th minute with a quality goal by
John Troncoso who sailed one past Jay Vetsch for the 1-1 score.
The Dinos barely had time to go after their first lead of the game when the visitors found the back of the net again. In the 16
th minute, Johnstone picked up his second of the game, adding to an impressive weekend for the Golden Bears' Number 9.
Alberta pulled away in the second half when Kevin Perry and CJ Gilroy recorded markers in the 53
rd and 61
st minutes.
Things went from bad to worse for Calgary when
Ali Eladawy was red carded in the 65
th minute. The substituted was accused of elbowing his opponenet while trying to head the ball.
Reigning Canada West First Star of the Week
Izak Lawrence cut the deficit to two in the 73
rd minute, but that's all the Dinos would muster in the ladder half of the contest.
The Golden Bears outshot the Dinos 14-10 in the game. Vetsch made three saves for Alberta while Brett turned aside five shots.
Calgary hits the road next weekend when they take on the Saskatchewan Huskies on Sept. 21-22 in Saskatoon.
