Morgan shines on Seniors' Night

BOX SCORE CALGARY – University of Calgary captain Tanya Morgan capped off a weekend she'll never forget, figuring in all six goals as the second-ranked Dinos wrapped up conference play with a 6-1 win over the Mount Royal Cougars Friday night at Father David Bauer Arena.

A night after playing at the Scotiabank Saddledome, Morgan picked up the hat trick and added three assists as the Dinos wrapped up a 23-4-1 regular season. She lit the lamp once in each period after being honoured in a pre-game ceremony on Seniors' Night along with fellow graduating players Jennifer Mallard, Melissa Zubick, Elana Lovell, and Erin Davidson.

“We came here ready to play hard tonight, and I just did what I could do out there,” smiled Morgan after upping her point total to 26 on the season, leapfrogging her into the top five in Canada West scoring. “I'll remember this for a long time – it was lots of fun out there tonight.”

Her second goal at the 18:00 mark of the second period caused some controversy. On the play, Morgan took a feed from Hayley Wickenheiser and beat Cougars netminder Jess Ross just inside the post. The goal light went on, the Dinos celebrated, but the referee waved off the goal immediately and play continued. The next stoppage didn't take place for nearly 90 seconds, after which the officials huddled and, after consulting with the goal judge, awarded the goal to Calgary.

That goal made the score 3-1 and took the wind out of the Cougars' sails, stemming any momentum they had built after Emily Harrison scored MRU's lone marker of the game on the power play earlier in the period.

After Stephanie Ramsay and Calaine Inglis scored in the third to make it 5-1, Morgan found herself on a three-on-one with Inglis. Inglis fired on goal, and Ross left a juicy rebound right on the stick of the Dinos captain, who sealed the hat trick with her ninth goal of the campaign into the yawning cage.

“Before the game we talked about playing for the five graduating players,” said Dinos head coach Danielle Goyette. “When you play like that and move the puck, it's fun to play hockey. Tonight it was important that we were working on details to make sure that we're ready for our next opponent.

“And for Tanya, that might have been the best game of her life. I don't think she could have dreamed of a better way to finish the regular season, and good for her – she struggled a little last night and it was good to see her bounce back.”

Iya Gavrilova scored the game-winner early in the second period for the Dinos. Inglis added a pair of assists to her tally, while Wickenheiser picked up three helpers on the night as well – giving her 43 points on the season and all but clinching the Canada West scoring title.

The Cougars managed one goal on seven power play opportunities, while the Dinos scored twice on the man-advantage. Calgary outshot Mount Royal 34-20 on the night, and Mallard picked up her fifth win of the season between the pipes.

Calgary will enjoy the bye next week before hosting a best-of-three Canada West semi-final Feb. 22-24 at Father David Bauer Arena. The winner of that series will earn a berth to the CIS championship tournament in Toronto.

Mount Royal finishes its first season in Canada West with a record of 8-17-3.
