BOX SCORE

Calgary - Spencer Edwards scored a pair of goals Friday night to lead the No.10 ranked University of Calgary Dinos to a 5-1 win over the Mount Royal University Cougars in Canada West men's hockey at Flames Community Arenas.

Walker Wintoneak, Cory Pritz and Jesse Ismond also scored for the Dinos (17-11-0), who are headed to the conference quarterfinals Feb. 15-17.

Curtis Beech got the lone Mount Royal goal. The Cougars finish 7-19-1 in their inaugural season in Canada West after making the jump to the university ranks for the 2012-13 season.

The win, combined with UBC's loss to Alberta tonight, solidifies Calgary's home playoff series set for next weekend at Father David Bauer Arena where they will host the UBC Thunderbirds. The two teams split their last series with UBC winning the first game 4-2 and Calgary taking the second game 7-4.

The teams skated through an uneventful first period in which they combined for only nine shots.

The weariness may have been the result of an intense meeting at the Crowchild Classic on Thursday night, when they played in front of 4,000-plus raucous fans at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

The Cougars had several opportunities to get the game's first goal in the first period on Friday. The Dinos handed them four power play opportunities but they could not make one count. Calgary had one man advantage during the opening 20 minutes.

Edwards opened the scoring on a power play at 1:27 of the second period. He took a cross-ice pass and shelved a wrist shot over Dalyn Flette, who couldn't get across the crease in time.

Wintoneak arrived at the crease in time to cash in a rebound with exactly two minutes left in the period to take the game into the intermission with a 2-0 score.

The Dinos put the game away with a three-goal third. Pritz beat Flette with a wrist-shot low to the stick side two minutes into the period. Edwards converted a rebound at 10:28 and Ismond did the same to complete the scoring with 2:13 remaining.

The Cougars woke up the crowd when Beech's wrist shot found the net 8:10 into the period to cut Mount Royal's deficit to 3-1. But Edwards got his second just over two minutes later to get that three-goal cushion back for U of C.

The Dinos registered double the number of shots on goal, 28-14.

The Cougars finished the night 1-for-6 on the power play. Calgary was 1-for-3.
