Thunderbirds storm back to force Game 3

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – Scoring three goals on just five shots in the second period, the UBC Thunderbirds kept their season alive with a 4-2 win over the University of Calgary Dinos Saturday night at the Max Bell Centre in Calgary.

The win evens their best-of-three Canada West quarterfinal series at 1-1 following Calgary's 3-1 Game 1 win Friday and forces the deciding Game 3 Sunday night. The puck will drop at 7 p.m. MT at Father David Bauer Arena.

Trailing 1-0 after the opening period, the Thunderbirds took full advantage of their few opportunities in the second. It started early, when Cole Wilson snapped up a loose puck in the neutral zone and wired a shot from just inside the blue line through the legs of Calgary netminder Jacob DeSerres to even the score at 1-1. Just over four minutes later, Cole Pruden beat DeSerres in the same spot to give the Thunderbirds a 2-1 lead.

Calgary managed to tie it up midway through the second when Max Ross poked home a loose puck during a scramble in front of the UBC goal, sneaking it through Jordan White to knot the affair at 2-2.

But UBC wasn't done. At 12:33 of the middle frame, Scott Wasden fired a shot toward DeSerres and Brad Hoban scooped up the loose puck and backhanded it over DeSerres for the eventual game-winner.

Despite being badly outplayed in the third period, with the Dinos outshooting them 12-5 in the final 20 minutes, the Thunderbirds managed to score the only goal of the stanza when Jessi Hilton skated in off the right wing and roofed a backhand over DeSerres to gain some insurance for the visitors and send the series to a third and deciding game Sunday.

Walker Wintoneak scored the other Calgary goal just 3:28 into the game, taking a nice feed from Corey Banfield on a two-on-one and one-timing it past White.

Neither team was successful on the power play, with Calgary going 0-for-3 with the man advantage while UBC could not convert any of its four opportunities.

The Dinos outshot UBC 29-18 on the night, but White made 27 saves in the UBC goal to extend their season by at least one more day. DeSerres took the loss, making just 14 stops on the night.

The winner of Sunday's rubber match will face the Alberta Golden Bears in a best-of-three Canada West semi-final next weekend at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
