Dinos sweep Wesmen in home opening weekend

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos completed the sweep of the Winnipeg Wesmen on their home opener weekend when they defeated the visitors 63-56 on Nov. 9 at Jack Simpson Gym.

Tamara Jarrett had a game-high 20 points on the night while point guard Kristie Shiels added another 14 for the Dinos and Ashley Hirons scored another 10.

For the Wesmen, Stephanie Kleysen led the way with 16 points and eight rebounds. Teammate Megan Noonan scored another 15 and had eight rebounds of her own while Danielle Baril added 11 of her own and grabbed six rebounds.

The first quarter was quite a low scoring game to start off as both teams had only scored one three-pointer apiece in the opening four minutes. From there, the Dinos began to sink some baskets, taking the lead at 7-5 and ending the first with a 14-10 lead.

In the second, the Dinos came out on fire outscoring the Wesmen 6-2 in the opening minutes. That lead wouldn't last for long though, as the Bisons went on a 5-0 run to catch up. Jarrett's second quarter of seven points provided the difference and allowed the Dinos a six point lead at half.

The half opened up with the Dinos jumping out to a 12 point lead thanks to the likes of Jarrett and Shiels, forcing Winnipeg to call a timeout. It wouldn't help for the visitors as the Dinos outscored the Wesmen 24-18 in the third.

In the final stanza, the Wesmen finally began to close the gap and picked up on defence, halting the Dinos scoring. Getting within three points was the closest the Wesman got as the Dinos held on for the win. In the last quarter, Jarrett and Shiels were the only Dinos to put up points in the 63-56 win.

The Dinos head out to Winnipeg to face the Manitoba Bisons, Nov. 15-16 while the Wesmen will host the Lethbridge Pronghorns that same weekend.
