BOX SCORE CALGARY – The No. 3 University of Calgary Dinos grinded their way to another victory on Saturday night at the Father David Bauer Arena as
Jacob DeSerres shutout the No. 9 University of Saskatchewan Huskies 2-0.
It wasn't pretty, but they can't all be. Holding onto a one-goal lead in the third period, the Dinos once again found a way to pick up two points and keep pace with the No. 1 Alberta Golden Bears.
While the Dinos are now 10-0-0, Saskatchewan drops to 4-6-0.
"We have been trying to protect leads in the third period and we have to find a way to not sit back and wait for the end of the game," stated Calgary bench boss
Mark Howell. "Every good team needs great goaltenders and that why we recruit good goalies. Jake [DeSerres] was fantastic tonight."
While Calgary was able to get off to a good start offensively on Saturday evening, neither team would find the back of the net in the first period. The Huskies had chances of their own with the majority of them coming late in the period after a couple of power play opportunities.
The longer the game remained scoreless, the feistier it got. Teams went back and forth in the second period before the Dinos finally broke the deadlock. Taking the puck from left to right across the front of the net,
Giffen Nyren potted his seventh goal of the campaign, beating Ryan Holfeld.
DeSerres continued to be steady between the pipes for Calgary as he turned away eight shots for the second straight period.
The Dinos put forth some good pressure in the final frame as they attempted to extend their lead. Calgary sent seven shots towards Holfeld but for a second straight night, the Huskies pushed hard in the third and made DeSerres make 16 stops for his third CIS shutout.
With eight seconds left on the clock,
Max Ross rounded out the scoring as he netted his second of the year, putting the puck in the empty net.
"There is nothing more fun in sports than winning," said DeSerres. "This year everyone is having a blast and hopefully we can keep it going."
The Dinos were 0-4 on the power play, while the Huskies went 0-3.
Dinos' hockey will see their first taste of regular-season Crowchild Classic action next week as they play a home-and-home set with the Mount Royal Cougars from Nov. 15-16. The teams will battle at the Father David Bauer on Nov. 16 with a 6 p.m. puck drop.
On Nov. 15-16, Saskatchewan will return to their home barn and battle the UBC Thunderbirds.
