Dinos suffer heartbreaker loss to Wesmen

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos will still be seeking their first win of the season after a tough 79-75 loss on Nov. 9 at Jack Simpson Gym against the Winnipeg Wesmen.

Philip Barndt scored a team-high 22 points for the Dinos in their loss and got the double-double, grabbing 12 rebounds. Both Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson and Josh Turner scored 16 on the night.

For the Wesmen, Steven Wesley was unstoppable, scoring a game-high 30 points and adding seven rebounds. Also hitting double digits was Andrew Cunningham with 13 and Travis Krahn with 10. Ryan Oirbans grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds.

Just like the previous night, both teams battled it out to take the lead at the start of the game. It was the Dinos picking it up this time, taking an eight point lead half way through thanks to four three-pointers early on from a number of players, including Ogungbemi-Jackson with two of them.

The Dinos' biggest lead was 12 points nearing the end of the quarter, but Winnipeg would pull within six after the first ten minutes of the game.

To start the second, Winnipeg went on a 6-0 run with Wesley waking up and getting on the board. Tied at 24, the Dinos found a way to respond as a three-pointer from Jasdeep Gill would round out a 7-0 run of their own to regain the lead.

It wasn't long until Wesley quite literally took it into his own hands, chipping away at the lead. His 14 points in the second quarter alone was the difference maker as the Wesmen headed into halftime up 42-39.

Halfway through the third, the Dinos would retake the lead after two Barndt free throws at 50-49 and from there the game remained a close contest in that quarter. Winnipeg's Wesley would continue to impress, helping give the Wesmen a four-point lead heading into the final quarter.

In the fourth, the Dinos pulled within one before tying it at 70 and again at 73. With Winnipeg up by two with 12 seconds left, a number of fouls, free throws and steps out of bounds would determine the Wesmen the winners with a score of 79-75.

Calgary will head east to Winnipeg to take on the Manitoba Bisons next weekend. The Wesmen are set to host the Lethbridge Pronghorns.
