CALGARY – After 12 days off, the University of Calgary Dinos will attempt to keep their season rolling and their undefeated streak alive as they welcome the No. 10 University of Saskatchewan Huskies to the Father David Bauer Arena for a two-game set.
The puck will drop at Bauer on Friday, Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. before finishing up the weekend the next night at 6 p.m.
A lot has happened since Calgary last left the ice in their most recent home game on Oct. 19 versus the Lethbridge Pronghorns. The Dinos took on the Manitoba Bisons in two games from Oct. 25-26 in Winnipeg where they improved their record to 8-0. The victories didn't come easy to the CIS's third-ranked club. In the first night, the Bisons took Calgary to overtime before
Drydn Dow scored his first colligate goal to clinch the Dinos' seventh-straight win. The following evening,
Walker Wintoneak netted a pair of markers on route to a 5-3 decision and Calgary's fourth sweep of the year.
Also announced in recent weeks by the Dinos was their new team captain. Now in his fourth season patrolling the blue line at the University of Calgary,
Brett Bartman was rewarded the captaincy by head coach
Mark Howell. In three previous years coming into 2013-14, Bartman had dressed for 77 games, collecting 13 points in the process. This season, the Medicine Hat, Alberta product has notched three points, including his first CIS goal on Oct. 12 against the UBC Thunderbirds. Bartman has no shortage of leadership experience, having won the Canadian Hockey League's Memorial Cup as a member of the Spokane Chiefs in 2008. He was also part of two trips by Calgary to the Canada West Final in 2011 and 2012.
Last week, Canada West and the Western Hockey League proudly announced Calgary forward
Chris Collins as the WHL men's hockey Graduate of the Month for October. Collins became the 26th Dino to receive the honour after exploding onto the university hockey scene with nine goals and five assists through the first month of the season. The former Saskatoon Blade is a part of the Dinos' top line of
Taylor Stefishen and
Adam Kambeitz that has dominated their opposition in eight contests thus far.
Saskatchewan will arrive in town looking to make a statement and show the rest of the conference they are still a force to be reckon with. The Huskies sit tied for third place in Canada West with a mark of 4-4-0. In the early going, Saskatchewan has battled consistency, not much different from the storyline that hindered Calgary in recent seasons. While half their losses have come against the powerhouse Alberta Golden Bears, half their wins have also come versus the lesser Pronghorns.
Leading the conference in scoring is Huskies' forward Derek Hulak. Through eight games, Hulak has 16 points, including five goals while showing he can still pile up numbers without long-time teammate Kyle Bortis. He is supported in the offensive zone by Kenton Dulle and Brennan Bosch. At the opposite end of the rink, Saskatchewan relies on Ryan Holfeld who has suited up in all eight games for the Huskies, compiling an impressive 2.13 goals-against average and a 0.930 save percentage.
Dinos hockey will see their first taste of regular-season Crowchild Classic action next week as they play a home-and-home set with the Mount Royal Cougars from Nov. 15-16. The teams will battle at the Father David Bauer on Nov. 16 with a 6 p.m. puck drop.
On Nov. 15-16, Saskatchewan will return to their home barn and battle the UBC Thunderbirds.
