Dinos put exclamation point on first half with 9-0 victory

BOX SCORE CALGARY – For the second consecutive night, the No. 2 University of Calgary Dinos took it to the University of Regina Cougars as they collected a 9-0 win in the final game of the fall semester on Saturday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Playing with a shortened bench due to injuries, Regina struggled to jumpstart their offence. The Dinos potted three first period goals and found the back of the net six more times before the final buzzer.  Kodie Curran led in scoring with two goals and two assists while Jacob DeSerres recorded his third shutout of the month by making 23 saves.

"We were really good last night but maybe better tonight," explained Dinos head coach Mark Howell. "Credit to our guys for playing with that kind of intensity and executing on the game plan with the speed they did."

Calgary will finish the unofficial first half with a 15-0-1 mark and will hold a three point gap between them and the second place Alberta Golden Bears after they lost their second game in as many weekends on Saturday. With the setback, Regina falls to 8-8-0 on the year.

"When you have a team like Regina coming in after what happened last night, they are going to have a little fire under them," said Curran. "We got on them quick and early. When you get those goals again right away it is devastating for them."

After a near-perfect first period a night ago, the Dino attempted to replicate that effort on Saturday. For a second-straight game, Calgary was able to score multiple goals before Regina could even register their first shot at 16:46 of the opening frame.

A mere 16 seconds in, Walker Wintoneak started the scoring for the home team. Scooping up a Kevin King rebound, Wintoneak netted his seventh goal of the year, beating the Cougars' goaltender Andrew Hayes.

After killing off a penalty, Calgary went back to work on a man advantage of their own. Directing a shot on net from the left side at a bad angle, Ryan Harrison picked up an unassisted tally as the puck slid through the legs of Hayes at 6:35. The goal was Harrison's third of the campaign.

The Dinos turned the red light on again on another power play just minutes later to make it 3-0. After a wicked shot by Spencer Edwards was stopped by the post, Curran jumped on the loose puck and wired it to the back of the net at 8:59. The power play marker was Curran's fourth of the season.

Regina had their best period of the weekend during the second period on Saturday, but DeSerres was up to the task. Turning away 15 shots, DeSerres managed to keep the Cougars off the scoreboard during the 20 minute stanza.

At the other end of the rink, the Calgary attack didn't slow down. Curran scored his second power play goal of the contest under a minute into the middle frame while Adam Kambeitz got his hands on a tap-in for his fifth of the season and a 5-0 lead.

"I kept it simple [tonight], less is more for me. Playing with good players, good things are going to happen," stated Curran on his four-point performance.

Notching their second four-goal period of the weekend, Calgary rounded out their scoring with nine tallies. Wintoneak dazzled the crowd with his second of the game in impressive fashion before being followed up by Giffen Nyren and Edwards on the scoresheet. Chance Lund put-in the final goal of the game as he earned his first as a Dino.

Calgary outshot Regina in the game 43-23. The Dinos were 3-3 on the power play, while the Cougars went 0-4.

Returning to school and the rink in 2014, the Dinos will play their first games of the second half on Jan. 10-11 in a home-and-home against the Lethbridge Pronghorns. Action will start at the Father David Bauer Arena on the Friday before shifting to the Nicholas Sheran Arena the following night.

Regina will also start the second semester against the Pronghorns, playing them on the road on Jan. 3-4.
