Jarrett's late heroics lift Dinos past Bobcats

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – Fifth-year Tamara Jarrett scored 15 of her 31 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning bucket with six seconds to play as the University of Calgary Dinos upended the Brandon Bobcats 66-64 Thursday night in the Jack Simpson Gym.

The victory was the seventh straight for the Dinos, who improve to 7-2 and move temporarily into a tie for first place in the Prairie Division. Brandon falls to 2-7 with the loss, which snapped the Bobcats' modest two-game win streak.

To gain the victory, the Dinos had to overcome a sparkling 39-point performance by reigning CIS female athlete of the week Cassie Cooke, who posted her second 39-point game in as many outings after dropping the same number on Mount Royal last weekend. Cooke tied a Canada West record with nine three-point hoops in the contest, but the Bobcats were unable to muster enough secondary scoring to out-gun the streaking Dinos.

Calgary responded with Jarrett, who scored seven points in the final minute and the final dozen for the Dinos overall. Cooke's ninth trey of the evening put the visitors up 62-59 with 90 seconds left, but Jarrett scored five in a row to give Calgary a two-point lead, then responded to a Cooke lay-up with one of her own in the final seconds to give Calgary the 66-64 victory.

"If we continue to play like that, we'll stay as a middle-level team," said Dinos head coach Damian Jennings. "Our tempo was hit-and-miss tonight, and that gave them a chance. I would like to have gotten into our rotations a little more, but if we return to what we're capable off it'll be a different game tomorrow."

The Dinos had trouble defending Cooke all night, and she made shot after shot from all areas of the floor. Of her 29 field goal attempts, 21 came from beyond the arc on a night where she added five assists, six rebounds, and a steal to her totals.

"There's no doubt she is a special player," said Jennings. "We have to do things off the ball to make her believe that what she's looking to do isn't there. We didn't pinch well enough off the ball, and we stood back a little too much. I challenged the players to have someone else beat us on that team, and there's no doubt some moments were better than others. But she's the best scorer in CIS, and her ability to get a shot off that quickly, with that much accuracy and that much distance, is a special talent."

The first quarter was all Brandon, with the Bobcats jumping out to a 14-6 lead. But the Dinos stormed back early in the second and put up 30 points in the period to emerge with a comfortable 10-point halftime lead. Brandon managed to erase that advantage in the third quarter to tie it at 48-48 heading into the fourth, setting the stage for the duel between Cooke and Jarrett down the stretch.

Kaela Cranston was the only other Bobcat in double digits with 11 points on the night, with the rest of the team combining for just 14. Stephanie Haynes pitched in with a team-high eight rebounds, while Jaynell Gillett added seven.

For the Dinos, Kristie Sheils added a dozen points, while Ashley Hirons potted eight as well. Jessica Thielen picked up a game-high 10 rebounds on the night, including five off the offensive glass, while Jarrett finished just shy of the double-double with nine boards on the evening.

The two teams wrap up their weekend series Friday night back in the Jack Simpson Gym, with tip-off at 6 p.m. MT live on CanadaWest.tv.
