Sharp-shooting Dinos knock off Brandon

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY – The home side shot 51 per cent from the field and got a 28-point night from reigning CIS athlete of the week Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson as the University of Calgary Dinos scored an 89-77 win over the Brandon Bobcats Thursday night in men's basketball action.

Ogungbemi-Jackson shot 10-16 from the field and 6-9 from beyond the arc to lead the Dinos to their fifth consecutive win, putting them above .500 for the first time this year at 5-4. The loss drops Brandon to 1-8.

After the fourth-year point guard hit a half-court shot at the buzzer to end the second quarter and bring the Dinos within a point at the break, Calgary went to work in an explosive third quarter. The Bobcats found themselves on the wrong end of a 28-13 score in the frame as the Dinos took advantage of their opportunities, eventually shooting 53 per cent from the field in the second half.

"We defended better, and for one quarter of the game our defence fuelled us," said Calgary head coach Dan Vanhooren. "Out of our defence, we got some better shots on offence and that turned the game for us. Turnovers continue to be an issue for us, and we were minus-four tonight. Four possessions matter, and our guys need to continue to learn and grow there."

After Brandon shot out of the gates and took an early seven-point lead midway through the first quarter, the Dinos settled in and tied it at 14 after 10 minutes. The buzzer-beater by Ogungbemi-Jackson made it 38-37 Brandon at the half, and the 15-point swing in the third quarter made it 65-51 Calgary heading into the final frame.

The majority of Brandon's scoring came from the bench, with 44 of the Bobcats' 77 points coming from outside the starting five. Kenonte Ramsey poured in 25 points in just 29 minutes on the floor, while Ali-Mounir Benabdelhak and Jordan Reaves adding 16 apiece. Reaves was also the team's rebounding leader with eight.

For the Dinos, Ogungbemi-Jackson kept pace atop the conference scoring leaderboard with his 28-point night, adding a team-high nine rebounds – all defensive – to his stat line. Big men Matt Letkeman and Philip Barndt chipped in with a dozen points each, while Josh Turner scored 10 in three quarters of action. Letkeman added seven rebounds, while Josh Owen-Thomas picked up five assists on the night.

Calgary was dominant on the glass on the night, picking up 45 rebounds to Brandon's 35. The Bobcats launched 67 field goals and made just 23, while Calgary's shot selection was more efficient, sinking 29 of 57 tries from the field. Both teams hit 11 from long range, with the Dinos going 11-22 while Brandon managed 11-26 from three-point land.

The Dinos and Bobcats will square off again Friday night, with tip-off at 8 p.m. MT live on CanadaWest.tv.
