Golden Bears earn split with OT win, Dinos maintain first place

BOX SCORE EDMONTON – Coming back from a 2-0 deficit, the No. 1 University of Alberta Golden Bears defeated the No. 2 University of Calgary Dinos 3-2 in double overtime in what will go down as an instant classic at the Clare Drake Arena on Saturday night.

Trailing after one period, the Golden Bears scored goals in the second and third frames, including with 19.1 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game into sudden death. Unfortunately for the Dinos, the crowd of over 2000 Alberta faithful was sent home happy following a shot by Kruise Reddick during three-on-three action in the fifth period.

Grabbing the extra point, Calgary will end an epic weekend one point ahead of their northern rivals with a record of 13-0-1. The Golden Bears improve to 13-1-0 trailing the Dinos in the conference standings by just one point.

Scoring all their goals in the third period a night earlier, Calgary was able to get off to a much faster start in Edmonton. Taking advantage of their first shot of the game at 4:28, Walker Wintoneak scored his sixth of the campaign, putting one past netminder Luke Siemens.

Just like last night, the Dinos took advantage of momentum and extended their lead just moments after scoring. Canada West's top goal scorer, Chris Collins, drove towards the net on the left side, shooting his 11th goal of the season past Siemens at 5:03.
Taylor Stefishen picked up his conference-best 16th assist on the play.

While a very aggressive, feisty Calgary attack was having success in the Alberta end, the Golden Bears were trying to replicate the same in the other zone. Alberta had 12 shots in the first but was once again turned away by Jacob DeSerres. Making his third-straight start, DeSerres made big saves on Travis Toomey and Jordan Hickmott to preserve his club's two-goal lead through 20 minutes.

Brett Ferguson almost scored the Golden Bears' first goal of the weekend minutes into the second period as his chance to the right of the goal was swallowed up by DeSerres in the dying seconds of a power play.

Alberta would finally beat the Dinos' goaltender on a man advantage at the 6:58 mark of the second. Sending the puck down low, Ferguson found Jordan Hickmott streaking in from the right side where he banged in his eighth goal of the year. The tally was just the second goal to find the back of DeSerres in 260 minutes.

Continuing to chip away at Calgary's defence, the Golden Bears put on a strong push in the third period. Despite good chances by both sides, it wasn't until the final minute that another goal went in. Firing a shot from the point, Jordan Rowley beat DeSerres for his sixth goal of the year, sending the game to overtime.

While four-on-four play for five minutes solved nothing, three players aside would. Letting a wicked shot go from the left wing, Reddick ended a thriller for Alberta to complete the comeback. His seventh of the season sent his team flying onto the ice in celebration and divided the weekend's wins.

The Dinos were 0-4 on the power play, while the Golden Bears went 1-4. DeSerres turned away 37 of 40 shots while his counterpart Siemens made 24 saves on 26 shots.

The Dinos will close out the first half of the season next weekend as they host the Regina Cougars in a two-game set. Action goes on Nov. 29 and 30 at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Alberta will be at home next weekend as they finish off the pre-Christmas schedule versus the Manitoba Bisons from Nov. 29-30.
