Kristie Sheils had a game-high 20 points in the University of Calgary Dinos fifth win of the season when they defeated the Thompson Rivers WolfPack 76-58 on Nov 22 at Jack Simpson Gymnasium.
Calgary improves to a record of 5-2, while Thompson Rivers drops to 3-4.
Sheils' performance led the Dinos followed by 15 points and six steals from Tamara Jarrett and another 12 points from Ashley Hirons. Rookie Brianna Ghali had a game-high eight rebounds along with eight points for Calgary.
For the WolfPack, point guard Jorri Duxbury led the way with 14 points and seven rebounds. Forward Kassie Colonna took control at the post for Thompson Rivers with 11 points and eight rebounds.
Throughout the beginning of the first, both teams battled it out and remained tied at nine with five minutes left in the quarter. It was the Dinos that began to pull away as they went on a 6-0 run later in the frame for a 17-11 lead.
With the quarter full of turnovers from both sides, it was Calgary that continued to capitalize. Sheils already had 13 points on the night as the quarter ended and the Dinos led 19-16.
In the second, Thompson Rivers came out of the break with a three pointer to tie the game up once again, but it was Hirons that responded right back for Calgary when she get a three of her own. From there, the Dinos exploded on offence, scoring 27 points in the quarter to the WolfPack's 19. The pushed the gap to 15 points with three minutes left, but would head into the second half up 36-45.
With three Dinos in double digits already, there wasn't much the WolfPack could do to stop the bleeding. A steal and a bucket from Ghali would push the Dinos lead to 18 points despite a low scoring quarter that saw the Dinos score 11 points and Thompson Rivers with just six.
Extending the lead to 20 at 65-45, the Dinos cruised to their fifth win, and fifth in a row, of the season over the Thompson Rivers WolfPack.
The Dinos will host another Pacific team in the UBC Okanagan Heat, Nov. 23 at 5 p.m. in the Jack, while Thompson Rivers will head south the Lethbridge to take on the Pronghorns.
