BOX SCORE LANGLEY, B.C. – With a balanced attack that saw five Spartans hit double-digit points, the Trinity Western men's basketball team earned an 87-80 win over Calgary Friday at the Langley Events Centre.
With the Dinos (0-1) hanging around late, a Taylor Heinrichs 3-pointer put the Spartans (1-0) up 77-68 and put the game out of reach. Calgary battled down the stretch and got within five points, but never closer.
Trinity Western was the better team both on the glass, outrebounding Calgary 50-41, and shooting from the field, hitting 41.4 per cent of its field goals to Calgary's 37.7 per cent.
Anthony Ottley led TWU in scoring with 17 points in his TWU regular season debut while Robert Rodriguez, also playing in his first game as a Spartan, added 14 points and nine rebounds while Mark Perrin, Denny McDonald and Heinrichs each had 13 points. Jesse Jeffers had a team-high 10 rebounds.
For Calgary, it was
Jarred Ogungbemi-Jackson with a game-high 23 points while
Josh Turner had 21 points.
Philip Barndt had a game-high 11 rebounds.
After a see-saw start to the first quarter, TWU took control with the score tied 8-8. Led by Perrin, who hit a pair of 3-pointers, the Spartans finished the quarter on 13-4 run and with a 21-12 edge.
The second quarter saw TWU build as much as a 13-point lead at 37-24 after a pair of made free throws from Robert Rodriguez. However, Calgary got to within 10 points at 38-28 and then a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Turner from his own 3-point line got the Dinos to within seven at halftime.
The Spartans dominated the boards in the first 20 minutes, collecting 29 rebounds, including 12 on the offensive glass, to Calgary's 18. Turner led the Dinos with 12 first half points while Ogungbemi-Jackson had 11. For TWU, it was Perrin and McDonald leading with nine points each.
The teams traded points for much of the third quarter until the Dinos went on a run to get within four points at 57-53. But just as Calgary got close, the Spartans roared right back. On the strength of a six points from Ottley, TWU opened a 60-53 lead going into the fourth quarter.
In the final frame, TWU scored the first six points to extend their lead to 13 points. But Turner and company weren't about to let the Spartans put this game to bed without a fight. The Dinos pulled to within four points, at 72-68, and looked to have gained momentum. But the Spartans responded with five points of their own, including Heinrichs' 3-pointer to reestablish a nine-point lead for TWU, at 77-68.
With 36 seconds left, Calgary's
Josh Owen-Thomas hit a 3-pointer to make it an 82-77 game, but the visitors didn't get any closer as TWU rolled to a seven-point win.
