Dinos collect 12th straight win, set the tone for next weekend vs. Alberta

BOX SCORE CALGARY – Laying a bruising on their inner city rivals, the No. 3 University of Calgary Dinos beat the Mount Royal University Cougars 8-1 on Saturday night at the Father David Bauer Arena.

Following a 3-0 win last night at the Flames Community Arenas, Calgary's offence exploded for eight goals as they thumped Mount Royal in their second game of the Crowchild Classic. The win gives the Dinos' a 12-0-0 record which matches the No. 1 Alberta Golden Bears for first place in Canada West. Those two teams will meet up next weekend in a home-and-home set. The Cougars fall to 4-7-1 on the season after a pointless weekend.

"Last night we had lots of shots and got rewarded sometimes, but tonight the puck found the back of the net early and guys just gained confidence," said Calgary head coach Mark Howell. "For the entire weekend we played a pretty sounds game. We played hard and fast which is what we wanted to do."

After scoring once in each period on Friday night, the Dinos matched that total output in under 20 minutes on Saturday. Max Ross got things started as he went bar-down to score his third goal of the season on the power play. Walker Wintoneak and Kevin King received assists on the play at 3:46.

The former Lethbridge Hurricane doubled the Dinos' lead at 6:33 of the first. Streaking in from the left side of the zone, Ross lifted a shot over Dalyn Flette and past him for his second goal of the evening, unassisted.

In a similar play, Giffen Nyren made it a 3-0 game with just over three minutes to go in the period. From the left side of the net, Nyren skated in and fired a low shot through Flette for his eighth goal of the year as Calgary jumped all over a stunned Mount Royal squad.

Carrying the momentum over to the second period, Calgary made it a 4-0 game. Connecting on a nice dish to front of the net by Nyren, Ross completed the hat trick with his fifth goal of the campaign.

"A couple of guys had told me to shoot more and get more pucks on net," explained Ross. "Chris Collins is a pretty good example of what happens when you get pucks on net so I just followed his advice."

A great individual play by King opened the game up even more. Racing after the puck in the defensive end against a Cougars defenceman, King won the race and then went backhand to beat the defender and goaltender. The goal was the Calgary native's second of the year and signalled the end of Flette's night as he was replaced by Kris Moore.

Taking advantage of some undisciplined play by Mount Royal, Calgary scored once more in the middle frame. Tapping in a rebound from the right side of the goal at 12:02, Walker Wintoneak netted his fifth marker of the season as his team took a commanding 6-0 lead into the final period of play.

In the third, Calgary picked up their seventh goal of the night. Letting a shot go at 3:07, Alex Dzielski picked up his second goal of the season as the puck sailed past a couple of legs and in.

Capitalizing on the power play at 6:56 of the third period, the Cougars scored their first goal of the weekend. Zach Evans-Renaud beat Jacob DeSerres with a slap shot from the blue line for his first of the season, ending the Calgary goaltender's shutout streak at 160:33.

Cory Pritz put the finishing touches on the scoresheet as he picked up a power play goal with just over two minutes to play. The tally was Pritz's fourth of the year.

The Dinos were 3-8 on the power play, while the Cougars went 1-6. DeSerres finished the night with 26 saves, earning third star honours.

Calgary will play another home-and-home set next weekend in what will be a battle for first-place. Beginning at the Father David Bauer Arena on Nov. 22, the Dinos will play the Golden Bears before traveling north to Edmonton the next day. Both teams are 12-0 and are ranked first and third nationally.

Mount Royal will play a home-and-home set of their own against the Lethbridge Pronghorns next week from Nov. 23-24.
