BOX SCORE CALGARY – For a second straight game, the No. 3 University of Calgary Dinos blanked their opponents. On Friday night it was the Mount Royal University Cougars who ended up on the backend of a 3-0 Calgary win at the Flames Community Arenas.
With the win, the Dinos improve to 11-0-0 and remain tied for the first place with the No. 1 Alberta Golden Bears. The Cougars drop to 4-6-1 on the season.
These two teams will bump heads again tomorrow night to complete the first round of Crowchild Classic play at the Father David Bauer Arena. Puck drop is 6 p.m.
It took a little time, but Calgary found a way to control the possession time in the first period. The Dinos fired 13 shots towards netminder Dalyn Flette, compared to three by the Cougars.
Dinos' starter
Kris Lazaruk made three stops through almost 10 minutes of play before exiting the game with an apparent lower-body injury.
Jacob DeSerres took over in relief.
While on the power play at 13:02 of the first, Calgary scored the game's first goal. Parked on the right side of the goal,
Chris Collins netted his 10th of the season with
Kodie Curran and
Giffen Nyren collecting assists.
In the second period Calgary continued to control the play. Mount Royal had their best chances of the period nearly halfway through as sniper Eric Galbraith tried to take things into his own hands. It started as Galbraith broke into the zone and clanked a shot off the bar as the score remained 1-0. Moments later Galbraith picked up the puck with an empty net, but DeSerres stretched across to deny the Cougars of a goal with a pad save.
With under five minutes left in the second period, the Dinos extended their lead. Receiving the puck from
Cory Pritz,
Walker Wintoneak notched his fourth goal of the year as he made it a 2-0 game on the man advantage.
Flette continued to be the busiest goalie at the rink in the middle frame as he made 14 more stops before finishing the night with 32 saves.
Playing in just his second game of the year, a former Mount Royal redshirt
Brooks Myers scored his first of the season.
Taylor Stefishen picked up the lone assist on the goal at 5:21 of the third.
Carrying a shutout from his previous game, DeSerres coasted the rest of the way extending his shutout streak to 113:37. The Calgary native also earned the win in relief with 12 saves.
The Dinos were 2-4 on the power play, while the Cougars went 0-3.
Calgary will play another home-and-home set next weekend in what could be a battle for first-place. Beginning at the Father David Bauer Arena on Nov. 22, the Dinos will play the Alberta Golden Bears before traveling north to Edmonton the next day.
Mount Royal will play a home-and-home set of their own against the Lethbridge Pronghorns from Nov. 23-24.
