BOX SCORE Chilliwack, BC - The University of the Fraser Valley Cascades women's soccer team tied the University of Calgary Dinos, 1-1, tonight in Canada West regular season action in Chilliwack, BC.
The Cascades improve their record to 2-3-2 for 8 points while the Dinos record improves to 5-1-2 for 17 points.
"It was a good battle between two hungry teams. University of Calgary opened the game brilliantly and I felt we were second best in individual battles far too many times during the early stages of the game," commented UFV head coach Rob Giesbrecht.
The Dinos came out strong tonight and controlled the majority of the first half as UFV's goalkeeper Kayla Klim, Burnaby, BC and the Cascade defense were very busy defending against a very strong offensive attack led by
Nikki Furukawa, Lethbridge, Alberta and
Tessa Miller, Calgary, Alberta. The Dinos attack was so strong that they were able to create six first half corner kicks and record seven shots on goal. UFV's defense withstood the pressure and held Calgary off the scoreboard until the 35th minute when Furukawa stole the ball off a Cascade defender and made no mistake in beating Klim to the short side for the Dinos lone goal of the night.
The second half started with more Calgary pressure and ten minutes in the referee awarded Calgary a penalty kick for rough play in the Cascades box. Klim made a brilliant save on the shot and the save turned the momentum of the match around as UFV started to control the midfield led by the dynamic duo of Carly Neeson, Maple Ridge, BC and Carley Radomski, Langley, BC. The two kept the ball away from Calgary and started to set up Cascades forwards Tristan Corneil, Surrey, BC and Danica Kump, Surrey, BC with perfect passes to challenge the Dinos' goalkeeper Samantha Chang-Foi, Calgary, Alberta. Chang-Foi made several excellent saves to keep Calgary in the lead.
Ironically it was Kump in the 55th minute that stole the ball from a Calgary midfielder and raced down the left side of the field and found Radomski in the middle of the park and the first year midfielder made no mistake in blowing the ball past the Calgary keeper to tie the match at one. The remaining 25 minutes were exciting back and forth soccer with both teams having numerous opportunities to net the winning goal. Both Klim and Chang-Foi made saves down the stretch to keep their teams in the match.
Klim was exceptional on this night recording nine saves and facing 15 Calgary shots to be named UFV's "player of the match." Furukawa was named the Dinos' "player of the match."
