BOX SCORE CALGARY- In their second game of the weekend, the University of Calgary Dinos would lose to the University of Regina Cougars with a finale score of 3-1 at the Father David Bauer Arena.
Penalties would once again decide the game with each team picking up a shorthanded goal. The Dinos appeared to be back in the game midway through the second scoring their lone goal. The Cougars however pulled ahead, a minute later to win 3-1.
Regina's Stephanie Sawchuk opened the scoring, having assisted the OT winner last night. Meghan Shervan would get the Cougars second and her second of the weekend in the second. Dinos own Heather Berzin brought the Dinos within one. Cougars Alexis Larson would notch the game winner.
"At times we let them dominate, have a chance that was the biggest difference. We needed to not give them a chance," said Dinos head coach
Kelly Bechard. "The bounces just didn't go in our favor, at times the puck trickled along the goal line."
Moments into the first period Regina got an early lead with a shorthanded breakaway goal from Stephanie Sawchuk. The third year forward caused a turnover at the hash marks on her fore-check, testing rookie goal minder
Karly McLeod in her CIS debut.
Calgary fought hard to tie the game up out shooting the Cougars 14-3 with majority of the shots coming from the slot, no goal was found though.
The Dinos fell into a bigger hole at the 7:38 mark of the second. With a bad angle shot from the goal line, Meghan Sherven beat McLeod for her second of the season. Kylee Kupper picking up the assist.
The later half of the second saw a lot of action with Dinos defenceman
Kitti Trencsenyi getting a penalty for holding on a 2-1 rush where Regina's Carlee Meszaros hit the post. Dinos' Heather Berzin would make the most of the penalty beating three Cougars in front of the net and ultimately, goaltender, Toni Ross to bring the Dinos within one. Rookie
Jessyka Holt would get the assist.
The Cougars extended their lead just a minute later. Alexis Larson got her first of the season with an unassisted low-lying shot from the point that went unseen by McLeod.
On players that stood out Bechard had this to say; "There were solid efforts from Berzin, Holt and
Jayme Clark. They brought it every shift."
Halfway through the second
Amanda Tapp was forced to step-in between the pipes for the Dinos, after McLeod was hit while holding the puck. McLeod would not return for the remainder of the game.
Tapp was tested in the opening minute of the third period, holding the Cougars to three goals with a save on her back. Neither goaltender would allow another goal for the rest of the game.
The Dinos had several opportunities to pull within one. Getting a 5-on-3 and two more power plays in the third, the Dinos just couldn't get it past the goal line. In a last ditch effort Calgary pulled Tapp with a minute left in the game for an extra attacker but it wouldn't make a difference.
The Dinos' will play two games in their Canada West division against the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds in Vancouver on Oct 11-12.
Regina will play two more games on the road next weekend, Oct 11-12 taking on the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns in Lethbridge.
