BOX SCORE REGINA – The University of Calgary Dinos took home all four points from their opening weekend series, topping the University of Regina Cougars 4-1 at the Co-operators Centre on Saturday evening.
After up-and-down starts to recent seasons, Calgary put the rest of Canada West on notice with their second win of the year, sweeping away 2012-13's most improved team in Regina. Both returning players and recruits made an impact on the weekend, with
Chris Collins and
Giffen Nyren each managing to record three points in two games.
Calgary was one of just two teams in the conference to pick up both wins this weekend as they sit at the top of the standings, tied with the Alberta Golden Bears.
Neither team was able to light the lamp in the first 20 minutes as the game remained scoreless. Making their season debuts, former junior teammates
Jacob DeSerres and Andrew Hayes made six and seven saves for their respective sides.
Much like Friday night, Calgary took advantage of some sloppy play by Regina in the early stages of the second period, staking themselves a 2-0 lead. On a power play, Nyren recorded his second of the season, beating Hayes with a shot to the blocker side just over a minute into the middle frame.
Max Ross collected the lone assist on the tally.
Less than two minutes later, the Calgary blue line produced another marker. Taking advantage of a Cougars' turnover in their own end,
Dan Gibb was the beneficiary of a two-on-one with
Adam Kambeitz for his first CIS marker.
Regina cut the deficit in half on a power play of their own at the 6:22 mark of the second. With the Dinos hemmed in their own end and with a player missing his stick, Christian Magnus connected off a rebound for his first of the year.
The Cougars had a number of strong opportunities to tie the game in the second half of the period, but couldn't get anything past DeSerres and the Calgary defence.
The Dinos did well coming out of the intermissions in the opening two contests of the season and proved why in Saturday night's final stanza. Fresh off the end of a power play and with the penalized Cougar still skating back into the play, Collins pivoted and fired his second in as many games past Hayes at 3:57.
Calgary capitalized on the momentum of Collin's goal as they posted another one at 6:25 of the third.
Walker Wintoneak chipped the puck across to the right side of the rink where
Spencer Edwards grabbed position and launched a shot over the pad of the Regina netminder. Edwards' first of the year rounded out the scoring at 4-1.
Calgary outshot Regina 24-16. The Dinos were 1-7 on the power play, while the Cougars went 1-5.
The Dinos are next in action on Oct. 11-12 as they welcome the UBC Thunderbirds to the Father David Bauer Arena for their home opener.
