BOX SCORE REGINA, SASK – Five different players scored for University of Calgary Dinos on the opening night of the Canada West season as they cruised to a 5-2 victory over the University of Regina Cougars on Friday night at the Co-operators Centre.
Even with 11 new faces on the roster, Calgary looked like a well-oiled machine from the drop of the puck. Returning most of their team from a year ago, the Cougars seemed out of sync through 40 minutes, not finding their legs until the third.
These two clubs will go at it again tomorrow night in the final game of this two-game opening weekend set.
The Dinos got on the board first, opening the scoring at the 4:15 mark of the first period. Former Waterloo Warrior Tyler Moir had a shot from the hash marks deflect off a defender, eluding goaltender Lucas Gore for his first as a Dino.
Despite the visitors controlling the majority of the play in the first 20 minutes, Regina managed to tie the game with Calgary down a man. Off a face-off in the Dinos' end, Brody Luhning scored his first collegiate goal, beating
Kris Lazaruk to make it a 1-1 game.
Calgary re-established the lead in the final minute of the first on a fantastic individual effort by defenceman
Kodie Curran. Scoring unassisted, Curran weaved his way through a pair of Cougars before faking out Gore and burying his first of the season.
In the second period, the Dinos opened up a 4-goal lead, thanks in part to two power play goals.
At 8:03, first-year forward
Chris Collins sailed a shot from the slot, getting it past Gore for his first as a Dino while on the power play.
Just over four minutes later,
Giffen Nyren broke in on a one-on-one. The Calgary native wristed a shot past the lone defender and found the back of the net for his first.
Kevin King extended the lead with Calgary's third goal of the stanza at 15:30. Collins' initial shot was denied by Gore, but the puck jumped out into open ice on the left side of the crease where King pounced for his first, coming on the man advantage.
Being outshot 28-14 after two periods, the Regina offence brought a much better effort to the final frame. Throwing 13 shots on net in the third period, the Cougars found the back of the net once on a goal by Brock Appleyard.
That was all Regina would get though as Lazaruk picked up his first regular season win since Feb. 10, 2012 with a 25 save performance.
Calgary outshot Regina 34-27 on the night. The Dinos were 2-7 on the power play, while the Cougars were 1-5.
After this weekend, the Dinos will host their home opener on Oct. 11-12 as they welcome the UBC Thunderbirds to the Father David Bauer Arena.
