Dinos qualify for Final Six in draw with Spartans

| By:
BOX SCORE CALGARY - The University of Calgary Dinos solidified their hopes of heading into the post season with a 1-1 draw with the visiting Trinity Western Spartans at West Varsity Pitch, Oct. 26.

The Dinos needed just one point from this weekend's games in the final weekend of the regular season, and they did just that with the draw. The Spartans needed to win both games this weekend to qualify and they were ultimately eliminated.

Izak Lawrence scored the tying goal for the Dinos, while Trinity Western's Jerome Lou was the one to put it in the back of the net for the Spartans.

Less than nine minutes in, the Spartans were the first to get on the board. With Jarvis Ambaka running up the sideline with the ball, he would deek out Calgary goalkeeper Jordan Unreiner and feed the ball to Lou. The forward made no mistake, scoring the opening goal of the game in a virtually open net.

The first half ended with the Spartans leading 1-0, with both teams getting chances and changing possession.

In the second, the Dinos knew that they needed at least one point to get into the playoffs, so they really put on the pressure in Trinity Western's end. Calgary had a number of chances to capitalize including the one of the best opportunities coming with 13 minutes left in the game. A ball fed down the line was crossed back to Brett Howard who came off the bench for Calgary. Despite a wide open net, Howard was unable to put it between the posts as it sailed high and wide.

With the game winding down, the Dinos continued to clog up the 18-yard box. Coming from that came a hand ball in the box from the Spartans. The golden opportunity was not missed as forward Lawrence easily beat goalkeeper Andrew Hicks on the penalty shot with five minutes left in the game.

The Dinos will play the UBC Thunderbirds in the final game of the regular season, Oct. 27 on West Varsity Pitch. Game time has been moved up to noon to accomodate weather concerns.
