BOX SCORE WINNIPEG – In what can only be described as a tooth-and-nail affair, the undefeated No. 3-ranked Calgary Dinos (7-0-0) continued their dominance over their Canada West men's hockey counterparts with a 4-3 overtime win versus the unranked Manitoba Bisons (2-5-0) Friday night at Wayne Fleming Arena.
A costly penalty from Bisons captain Dane Crowley in the overtime frame provided Calgary the momentum it needed to grab the road victory. On the powerplay, rookie defenceman
Drydn Dow scored with just 46 seconds left in overtime, lifting Calgary to the 4-3 victory.
Bisons netminder Deven Dubyk stopped 24 shots in the losing effort, while Calgary's
Kris Lazaruk stoned 25 of 28 Manitoba shots in the winning effort.
With just under four minutes left in the first frame, Luke Cain scored the game's opening goal for Manitoba by pouncing on a loose puck near the top of the Dinos' crease. Assisting on Cain's first marker of the season were Aaron Lewadniuk and Brendan Rowinski.
Rookie forward
Adam Kambeitz put the visiting side on the scoreboard with an even-strength goal with roughly two minutes left to play in the second period, ending Dubyk's campaign for his second shutout of the young season. Assisting the Dinos freshman wer forwards
Taylor Stefishen and
Chris Collins.
Taking advantage of a power play, Calgary's
Cory Pritz ripped a bullet from the point, putting the puck over Dubyk's right shoulder and into the back of the net. Pritz' marker, assisted by forward Collins, gave the visiting Dinos a 2-1 lead going into the third period.
Calgary's late scoring push in the waning moments of the second period lit a fire under Manitoba. Just under two minutes into the third frame, the Bisons found redemption. Second-year forward Dylan Kelly tied the affair at two goals apiece with a nifty snap shot past Lazaruk.
At 15:52, Calgary's powerplay unit hit pay dirt again. Rookie defenceman
Davis Vandane teed off from the blue line, ripping the puck past Dubyk, giving Calgary a 3-2 advantage.
With just 2:34 left in the third, the Bisons leaned on the capable shoulders of captain Dane Crowley – and it paid dividends. The fifth-year Crowley lit the lamp on a breakaway goal, sending the game to overtime.
The two teams butt heads again tomorrow night at Wayne Fleming Arena at Max Bell Centre. Puck drop is slated for 5 p.m. CT.
